Mamalouka Mykonos — Restaurant in Municipality of Mykonos

Having been to this restaurant on two separate occasions, we were really looking forward to eating there again. In the past the service has always been slick and hospitable. The food has always been excellent, hence we wanted to return. However, we were very disappointed third time round. We’d made a reservation. When we got there my friend and I were seated near a very large party. We wanted to be seated somewhere a bit quieter. When I asked what I presume to be the maitre d’ if we could move, I got a very curt response saying that it was not possible. It wasn’t the fact that he said no which I found objectionable, but his manner. He was distracted and dismissive.

We ordered our food, some sparking water and white wine. One waiter opened a bottle of water and poured two glasses and then walked off. We never saw that bottle again. The starters came, but no wine so I asked again for it. 10 mins later it arrived.

The starters were tasty but my friend ordered a warm starter of Greek tapas meats, which arrived in a lukewarm state.

Our mains then came. I ordered the grilled sea bass, which was pleasant enough. The vegetables that accompanied it were tasteless and limp.

My friend ordered grilled shrimp which came on a bed of wild black rice. The rice was cold and also tasteless. There were no condiments on our table at all.

Throughout all this we had to wait 20mins or so for our wine to be topped up. It was put out of our reach, so we couldn’t even help ourselves.

When we’d finished our mains, our waiter cleared everything away, leaving empty wine glasses that required a refill. Again we waited another 20mins for them to be topped up. We weren’t offered the dessert menu and no one bothered to ask us how our meal was.

The waiters all seemed to be rushing around, with no direction at all. It was totally chaotic, a bit like the traffic by the bus stop in the town.

We waited another 20 mins for our bill (which we asked for on three separate occasions). They’d charged us for the water, which we hardly had, so we decided not to pay for it. We decided not to leave a tip, as the service was unsatisfactory, and completely at odds to past experiences.

It seems that the restaurant has become all style, with no substance. No amount of carnival dancers and beautiful decor can make up for poor attention to the main detail;...

We went to Mamaloukas on our last evening in Mykonos because of a recommendation seen on Instagram apparently made by locals.

When we got there the restaurant was empty but still we were seated at the side on a high table where all waiters walk through.

We ordered one glass of wine (i dont drink) so my bf didn‘t want a whole bottle for himself. Waiter could not recommend any wine at all and wanted my bf to take a bottle anyway. We denied.

We ordered one starter and two mains. While my bf was still in the middle of eating his starter the waiter came and asked if he could bring the mains.

My bf took the panccheri which was a bowl with like 5 bites of pasta in it. He was clearly disappointed. My steak was good but served with potatoes and vegetables means more than 4 pieces of each for me. We pretty much shared my main as he is a tall guy who eats more than just five spoons of pasta.

Then we had a look at the check. The first four positions were written in greek - pretty unconvenient for people not able to read greek letters. We did not think much of it and wanted to pay. As we were not too happy with the service and the food we wanted to give a tip of 6€ and not more.

Here comes the best part: when my bf proceeded to tell the waiter make it 130 instead of 124 the guy in all seriousnes told him: ‚mhh we usually make a 10% tip so lets make 135€‘ and literally tiped it into the machine. We were too stunned to speak.

We paid and went outside and then only realised what just happened.

As we later found out while reading the reviews here the restaurant already charges a tip of 6€ and writes it down in greek so tourist don't notice it. Also the bread in the beginning gets charged without asking - which we knew from...

Its not the worst restaurant I've eaten in. It is the worst I've eaten in on Mykonos. A venue with an identity crisis. Doesn't know if its a pretentious shisha bar or a pretentious restaurant. It fails on both attempts. The music is too loud and the lights too low. You can't hear your partner or see your food. All this while smoke from other tables blows across your face while you eat. The restaurant is shamelessly understaffed. Tip to the manager if you refuse to leave bottles on tables then actually have enough staff to refill patrons glasses. Rather than have people wandering across the restaurant trying to retrieve their bottle from the communal ice bucket in the semi darkness. I lost count of the number of times I watched this tonight. Tip #2 Dont wander around shouting at your over worked staff, do something to help.Tip#3 Dont pull joints of meat from the fridge with unwashed hands, then return one minutes later then hand out menus still without washing your hands. Have you even heard of cross contamination? Tip #4 Wearing a "no worries" Tshirt doesn't make you look cool. It makes you look like the cleaner. Tip#5 Your ordering and billing process is incompetent if some has to ask for their bill 3 times and waits 30 minutes It's a real shame as the kichen is really rather good even if the menu is far too long.
