Civitas Restaurant Coffee Bar — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

We entered the restaurant with high expactations given the good reviews on google. The first alarm bell was the unholy smell which had no place in an outdoor setting. The garden was pretty enough and had plenty of customers so we thought what could go wrong. We ordered one mojito, dolmas with greek yogurt, cretan salad, octopus and kleftiko. The mojito was an awful layered cake of sugar, pure alcohol and two wilted almost black mint leaves. The plate with dolmas looked like it was improvised using last night leftovers with one dolma having the filling almost missing. The yogurt didn't taste real and it was probably "enriched" with lots of flour. Salad should be a safe dish. In this case the cheese was highly fermented and not in a nice french way, but because it wasn't stored in proper conditions. The octopus was simply raw and chewy and we didn't get to taste the kleftiko after all this bad experience, we gave up and asked for the bill. The young woman that served us was very kind and embarassed of the whole situation and offered to give us the food to take away and she expressed her dissapointment about us leaving without eating their food and paying for the whole bill. First of all I would like to say that the waiters are very respectful and genuine. But that’s probably the only positive comment I can make about this place besides the good spot. We ordered some starters and main dishes. They brought the starters after about 30 minutes, which was fine at first…I ordered garlic bread which I was really looking for. Unfortunately, they used bang average burger buns and put some sort of seasoning on top. Anyways..it took another 40 minutes to bring us the main dishes after I asked them when the food would come. I’m a patient person but after a long day at the beach without eating, I had a very hard time waiting and pretty much starving. A restaurant should be prepared for big orders like that. When the food finally came, 2 orders were wrong and some people in our group finished their meal before others even got it. I ordered fried squid and it had no taste and was very disappointing. Eventually, we just wanted to leave and had to wait another 15 minutes for the bill after asking for it multiple times. I don’t think it’s a bad restaurant. The food was okay, but nothing special. The pizza looked like it was a frozen pizza, but we know it wasn't because we asked them to take the pineapple off. We still paid full price for it though. Just lucky that we didn't order the same pizza with mushrooms on it and ordered it without mushrooms, because we would have paid 50ct more for the exactly same pizza. The pizza just looked really bad. The beyond meat burger was boring aswell. Only ketchup as a sauce and no extras besides tomato and iceberg lettuce. The fries looked handcut but we're served without sauce. The burger bun of the beyond meat burger was probably not even vegan. It looked like it was a brioche bun with milk in it. But not sure about this one. We got the bill and we're served two tiny pieces of watermelon afterwards which were already included in the bill. It was only 50ct but still annoying.
