Trigona Elenidi: A Sweet Revelation in Thessaloniki

Tucked unobtrusively on one of Thessaloniki’s main streets, I had read the reviews of this place as one of the most authentic creators of the local triangular pastry. If you don’t have a sweet tooth stop reading now, unless you want to be converted! It’s one thing to read reviews, but quite another to actually experience the taste, the texture, the experience as the brain tries to find parallel memories, to compare to what is going into the mouth. While I waited in the queue in the small and very chic contemporary bakery, I observed the amounts that people were taking, and spoke to one of the assistants.I decided having read that “one was not enough“ – and knowing myself I was pretty sure that would be the case – to go for a box of four small pastries. It took all my restraint to get to a nearby park and sit in the shade to try my first bite. Looking closely at these sweet beauties, I had no idea of the mind-blowing deliciousness that was to follow. As I mentioned above, my mind tried to draw similarities, the pastry being a little bit like a good, perfectly balanced sweet tasting, soft yet somehow slightly crunchy baklava; the cream somewhere between what the French call crème anglaise, raw condensed milk and a sort of thick delicious icing. Everybody knows that food is an earthly experience, yet somehow the best culinary experiences transport us to almost spiritual realms! The first two mouthfuls were exquisite, and I would like to say that I savoured the rest as much, but the combination of taste was so heavenly that I found myself munching far faster than I had planned. I took a break and a then a second one, finally sated, like a guilty Pandora, I closed the box again. When will those other two be eaten? I would like to say tomorrow, but the chances are the box will be emptied by midnight. Absolutely 100% recommended.

The famous “triangles”! We asked a local where his favorites were, and this was it. At 3€/pc (big size) and 21,5€/1kg, they tend towards the expensive side. However, the crust and filling, and marriage between the two, is sure to leave you desiring for another a couple hours later. (Yes, it’s that sweet.) The shop is well located but can get crowded, so do expect some wait to get your turn. There is no sitting area, so you’ll have to enjoy your “triangle” on the road or standing by the church nearby. There was a poor baklava sitting there alone, which I found funny — the appeal of the “triangles” is, it seems, enough to steal the show. All in, can recommend. 🙂

Elenidis is truly a gem when it comes to sweets, delivering an experience that is nothing short of amazing. From the very first bite, you’re swept away by the unique and unforgettable flavors that you simply won’t find anywhere else. Their signature sweet is a masterpiece — perfectly balanced in taste, texture, and presentation. Each layer of flavor feels thoughtfully crafted, leaving you savoring every moment.

What sets Elenidis apart is its ability to create something so distinct yet universally appealing. The richness of the ingredients, combined with the care and tradition poured into every bite, results in a dessert that feels indulgent yet comforting. It’s clear this isn’t just a sweet; it’s an experience steeped in heritage and passion.

The texture is another highlight. Whether it’s the delicate crunch or the smooth, creamy finish, every bite is perfectly balanced. Pairing it with a coffee or tea elevates it even further, creating a moment you’ll cherish.

If you’re searching for a sweet that goes beyond the ordinary, Elenidis is a must-try. It’s one of those rare finds that stays with you long after you’ve finished it, leaving you eager to return for more. Truly...

We ordered the small trigona and it was delicious. A little too sweet for my taste, but would definitely eat it again. The service was subpar though. After we ordered our trigona at the counter, we went to pay. However, after the girl had finished with the customer in front of us, she completely ignored the fact that we were in line to pay and left the register to go deal with the trigona with another girl. We stood there awkwardly for like 5 minutes holding our trigona before she turned to look at us, whispered a few words to her colleague before reluctantly coming back to the register. It was such a strange interaction and we genuinely could have walked out without paying because they completely ignored us. Delicious dessert,...
