This started out as a mildly bad experience -- but the restaurant's response made it much, much worse. When I expressed some concerns about the meal, the hostess explicitly told me that they don't care what their customers think because they are "always full." That tells you something about their attitude to hospitality.
My initial impressions were as follows: The decor was disappointing. I was seated inside, and the inside of the restaurant is not nice at all. It's hot and sweaty. There's a refrigerator in the middle of the room -- and not in a charming way, but in a dilapidated and run-down way. The service and food were not great either. Not atrocious, but nothing special and there are many better options in Santorini. The experience to that point was not great, but perhaps not meriting of a one-star review.
Where things really went downhill was at the end of my meal when the hostess asked how my meal was. I explained that I was disappointed. I also expressed my concerns to the waiter when he came by with the bill. I wanted to give them a chance to make it right before I posted a negative review here. Although the waiter recognized my concerns and was somehow apologetic, the rest of the staff went into a fit of pique that anyone had dared to complain.
The hostess came by and told me, "This restaurant is open 20 years and we are always full. If you don't like, I don't care." The chef came out shortly after demanding to know what my problems were, and how I liked the food. I told him the food was OK and then started to explain what I was unhappy about. Before I could finish, he muttered something under his breath and walked away.
Needless to say, the unprofessional behavior of the staff overshadowed the experience. Rather than try to fix a bad experience, they became vindictive and openly hostile. Before this experience, I couldn't imagine encountering a hostess so openly disdainful of her customers as the one I met here. It's unfortunate, but her ignorant and provincial mentality prevails here--as long as new customers keep coming, they don't care whether their existing customers are satisfied or not.
The one thing that can be said of this place (and perhaps the main reason it continues to attract customers) is that it is very, very cheap. I didn't realize that when I booked it. They seem to fill up the tables with cheap prices, in lieu of good food or service. Although others completing reviews of this place on TripAdvisor may feel differently, personally I think a nice experience is worth a few extra euros. I had a much better experience at other, nicer restaurants in Santorini. In light of the staff's lack of grace or hospitality, I could not...
Read moreWe stumbled on this unassuming restaurant along the backstreets of Kamari. Unlike all the other eateries, there was no being hassled to come and enjoy their food, just a simple hello. They have live music every night, mix of Greek and some English, which was not too loud. The food, is exceptional, that good we went twice. The chef and owner ensures that all the staff are as warm and friendly as he is. There were four in our party and although all the restaurants in Kamari will make you welcome, Alexander not only delivered beautiful Greek food but the ambience was a delight and there was no need for smelling salts when the bill tipped up. If you like prawns, then their take on Prawn Saganaki will leave you absolutely speechless. He gave me his recipe. I highly recommend this establishment if a) you are a discerning diner that enjoys authentic cuisine; b) doesn’t appreciate overinflated prices because your starter and the sign outside, both appear on a strip of slate and c) because you’ve gone to Greece to enjoy Greek...
Read moreReally nice and clean restaurant just some meters away from the beautiful beach of Kamari. The food is really really fresh and tasty. You can try shrimps or chicken Alexander with cheese cream and mushrooms which are my favourites and some of their best dishes. There is also the greek traditional souvlaki and combine it with fresh fried aubergines, tzatziki, fresh French fries, special greek salad which is very refreshing and fresh as well and try with some ouzo (the traditional greek drink). The waiters are very very professional and polite. When you visit Alexander restaurant, you will definitely feel the greek hospitality. One of their most important features of this restaurant is live music (bouzouki and guitar) you will definitely enjoy listening to this kind of music and you will mentally travel through the notes of bouzouki. The atmosphere is so good that people dance and enjoy the moment. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!! Once you go there you will never forget...
