After arriving in Budapest, we went in at 9:00 for a late dinner. We ordered beef goulash, basic langos, and a beer. The beer arrived about five minutes later, but the table next to us, who had ordered at the same time, gave us two. They looked around for the other one, wondering where it was, so we asked if it was ours and took it. About 10 minutes later, the food from the next table arrived. After another 10 minutes, we asked if ours was still coming, and they said they'd check. About five minutes later, the goulash arrived, followed by the langos. We told them it wasn't the langos we ordered because it had meat on it, and they refused to charge us any more. The table next to us was almost finished eating when we got our food, so I was tired of waiting and in a bad mood, so I scooped up some goulash to eat, and it had chicken in it instead of beef. I asked a passing female employee if this was beef goulash, and she said yes without even looking properly, so I scooped out the chicken and asked if it was chicken. She yelled at another employee in an agitated voice and left without even apologizing. Another employee came and took the food back. After 20 minutes, the food still hadn't come out, so I asked a person who seemed to be the general manager, and after a while, the goulash and basic langos that we had ordered (we ordered the basic with the intention of dipping it in the goulash) came out. When I rummaged through the goulash that came out, I saw a few pieces of crushed vegetables, a few strands of broken beef, and pieces of chicken. It was like a mix of beef goulash and chicken goulash. (I thought it was Hungarian goulash, so I endured the discomfort and ate it, but the next day, I tried it at a different restaurant and found that the soup really brought out the flavors of the ingredients.) It took an hour for the food to arrive and 10 minutes to leave. It was my first day in Hungary, and the food was tasteless. The seemingly friendly but friendly staff, using the excuse of being busy, gave me random food without even a proper apology, ending the day feeling extremely disappointed. I will never go back... This is a restaurant I would not recommend at all. I should have carefully checked the bill before paying, but I later found out they still charged me a 15% service charge. They say a traveler's time is money, but they should have compensated us for wasting our time. How could they ask for a service charge and then arbitrarily charge it without even asking us to choose? I thought this restaurant was completely unreasonable. I was drawn in by the atmosphere, but it was my first night in Hungary,...
Read moreService forces you to leave google reviews and they charge tap water!!! Ok food but overrated and could improve! The beef goulash was tasty, but it felt heavier in our stomach than all the other goulash soups we ate in any other restaurant. We tried the pollo langosh and a langosh with vegetables. They had some ingredients that weren't mentioned in the menu (e.g. olives) and if we knew that we would have chosen otherwise, so I suggest updating the menu. They were tasty but the bread is fully fried and as a result it felt that no matter what ingredients they put on it, you're always going to taste mostly the fried bread. So, we'd prefer it if the fried taste of the langosh bread was not that strong. After this meal most of us felt our stomachs quite heavy and not that great. Probably due to the fried langosh and the oil that was in the goulash. The atmosphere was ok, casual and cozy. There's also a tv showing football matches. Toilet was quite dirty which makes me skeptical about hygiene in the kitchen. When the bill came they had charged us for a bottle of water that wasn't mineral or in any closed bottle. They charged us for a bottle of tap water!!! This is the first time I've ever experienced this and it's a shame... Also before bringing the bill they asked us not that politely to write a Google review. They brought us a QR code and waited patiently for us to scan it and write a review. I said I'd write a review later because it felt uncomfortable trying to write a review in front of the waiter. I think it's good when they suggest that you review them because it means they care. However, the way they commanded it in this restaurant was very impolite and it felt more like a blackmail than a friendly suggestion. At the time I was confused but based on other reviews I see that this is common in...
Read moreA Squirrel's Tale of Two Halves at the Goulash & Lángos Bar
As a little squirrel on a culinary expedition in Budapest, I was excited to visit a place dedicated to two of my favorite things: goulash and lángos. The aroma alone was a promise of a hearty, delicious meal, and I was ready to gather my feast. The experience, however, was a tale of two very different halves.
The food, I must say, was absolutely fantastic. The goulash was rich, flavorful, and filled with tender beef—a perfect, comforting dish. The lángos was exactly what I had hoped for: crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and generously topped. Both dishes were not cheap, but the quality and the generous portions made them well worth the price, especially if you plan to share with a fellow hungry squirrel.
The service, at first, was just as good as the food. The staff was friendly, attentive, and quick to take our order. They brought out our food promptly and with a smile, and we were truly enjoying the atmosphere. It felt like we had found a true hidden gem.
That is, until we asked for palatschintas. It was a simple request for some dessert, but it seemed to change the entire dynamic. The friendly smiles vanished, and the staff's demeanor shifted from helpful to almost cold. The service became slow and a bit distant, and it felt as though we had committed some sort of a social blunder just by asking. It was a bizarre and unexpected turn that left us a bit confused.
Despite the strange shift in service, the food was the star of the show and saved the day. The goulash and lángos were truly a wonderful meal and a great taste of Hungarian cuisine. This squirrel would still recommend this place for the food alone, but be prepared for a potential mystery when it...
