Mátra Borozó — Restaurant in Budapest

In today’s world, with so many luxury options and endless choices, it’s rare to find something truly authentic — a place that feels unchanged by modern trends. I’ve known about Mátra Borozó for a while, but only visited recently with friends, and it was such a unique experience.

The atmosphere is like stepping back in time: old-school interior, warm and cozy, with a genuine character you don’t find easily anymore. In just one hour we saw all kinds of people enjoying this little getaway — younger guests sipping wine and playing chess, others just sitting quietly, some finishing their day’s work with a glass of wine. It’s not flashy like some of the trendy bars or premium wineries in Budapest, but that’s exactly what makes it so special.

The food, the drinks, the service — all brilliant. Prices are very affordable, but honestly, the atmosphere itself is priceless. It truly feels like time travel, and it left us with a memory we’ll carry for a long time.

I selected Matra based on the retro style and reviews. Unfortunately, it is being run by the most rude and aggressive owner we've ever come across. An awful experience that spoilt a Birthday evening. The owner dislikes large groups (despite taking our booking and a large sum of money for food), dislikes foreigners and Hungarians, or just dislikes people in general (hence no additional staff to assist him). The owner should not be running a bar or any business providing a service. He gives 'hospitality' an entirely different meaning. This bar is a true gem in Budapest! Not only does it offer superb wine and a rich cultural ambiance, but the food is outstanding, prepared with heart. What's truly remarkable is the owner, who single-handedly manages everything with impressive dedication. His warm demeanor adds to the welcoming atmosphere. A visit here is not just about the drinks and food; it's an experience that embodies the soul of Budapest's vibrant culture and history.
