Véndiák Étterem — Restaurant in Budapest

The most impressive thing was the waiter that served us, a credit to Budapest and this restaurant, high class service and as a sommelier did a fantastic job, firstly advising us on the choices of Hungarian wines to match the food we had chosen then the first bottle of wine he tested as per a high class establishment seemed a bit of a show but obviously done for good reason, and although not totally corked it was off and he could have tried to pass it, but as it was not up to standard was replaced without my opinion, the second bottle was opened with the same degree of care and consideration and once approved decanted, this although not expensive by English standards it was excellent. What a rude reception! My husband and I were walking around centre of Budapest looking for a nice place for a spot of lunch and a couple of beers. It was a warm but cloudy afternoon but the forecast was for storms. We noticed Vendiak Café and thought it looked okay and the weather was decent enough to sit outside. We chose our table and I asked my husband to grab some cushions from some other unused chairs. A woman came out literally shouting 'NO! NO! NO!' in a very angry tone. The pair of us were flabbergasted at her hostile manner. She ordered my husband to put the cushions back which he did and we made a sharp exit, thinking what a lucky escape we had had. Would not recommend on the basis of this and although I hate giving anywhere a bad review, this really deserves due to the appalling customer service. Please avoid. Our visit to this restaurant was deeply disappointing. The person serving us, who also introduced himself as the manager, provided extremely poor service and behaved in a way that felt discriminatory. It was disheartening to witness a noticeable difference in how other tables were being treated compared to ours.

When we asked about portion sizes and how long the food would take, we were met with an indifferent "I don't know," with no effort to assist or clarify. Later, when we shared that we were unhappy with the service, he casually dismissed our concerns by claiming he was "just joking"—which only made the experience worse.
