Before visiting Reykjavik, I asked GPT what should not be missed. Kaffivagninn, Iceland' oldest restaurant, was on the list. Additionally, it came highly recommended by George, our guide at nearby Reykjavik Bike Tours. Thankfully for us, the restaurant had just reopened after an extensive interior renovation. From our travels to other Scandinavian countries, my wife and I know to order fish soup. Even better, Kaffivagninn’s serves traditional Icelandic fish stew…with melted cheese and Béarnaise, plus sweet rye bread and butter. And the Fish & Chips with red cabbage slaw is melt-in-your-mouth scrumptious. Here, service perfectly complements the food. This was a totally FIVE STAR experience!

Absolutely amazing fish restaurant. You may be surprised how short the menu is (small little black table in the middle of the bar, behind the counter which you may be looking for for long aming the cakes and coffee machines), but don't be misled. All fish food is wonderful there! Fish balls and Odin's soup probably best of the best. May be difficult to find table as many locals are there and some tourists find a way there too. Located at the old harbour makes it also quite special. Service is really friendly and prices very reasonable (of course for Reykjavík). Update; kitchen open till 3pm only (not sure though if all days, been there on Friday 3:05pm and was too late)

We stopped in for dinner and can't recommend it enough! We had made reservations online, which I also recommend. They've only been reopened for a little over a week, but they were pretty full for dinner. The place is very cute and cozy, seated right on the water, and we got a window table with a nice view of all the boats. We ordered the fish soup, lamb tenderloin, and the "Joi Special". The food was amazing! Everything tasted fresh and had so much flavor. And we had the best waiter, Oskar. He made us feel like old friends over for dinner, and even brought out a beautiful dessert when he found out it was my birthday. Can't wait to go back and try more of their dishes!

We were looking to have some authentic Icelandic food before the end of our trip and were recommended a few local options. We tried the other options, but since we had called at short notice for a reservation, they were all booked up for the night. Because of this, we stumbled upon the last option on our list, Kaffivagninn. There, we were greeted with helpful staff and a cozy atmosphere that made us feel at home almost immediately.

Eventually, we got to ordering and selected the Fish and Chips, the Panfried Fish Balls, and The Kaffivagninn Fishpan. The F&C were cooked to perfection, and were overall very good. The fish balls were absolutely delicious, being consistently cooked on the inside and filled with fried and sliced cod coated with bread crumbs. My personal favorite, however, was the Fishpan. Presented beautifully in a light, translucent wine sauce, the fish was lightly breaded and served alongside roasted potatoes that perfectly complimented it.

For dessert, got one slice each of the Chocolate, Blueberry, and Carrot cakes. Each one of them was better than the last, being sweetened just enough to allow for a nice sugary delightful feeling but not an overload on the tastebuds.

I’m not sure how Icelandic or authentic the food was, but its quality is indisputable. Overall, the subtlety of flavors present in each dish we received was a stark, refreshing, and welcome contrast to the brash and overpowering flavors usually experienced. This, coupled with the excellent service allowed for a memorable...

I saw that several reviews mentioned the quality of the fish served here, so thought I'd check it out. The fish and chips is indeed incredibly fresh and very well done. As a Brit who regularly eats fish and chips, I can honestly say that this is probably the best fish and chips you'll ever have. The restraunt is unassuming yet atmospheric at the same time. A very calm and intimate place to enjoy conversation, a few drinks and excellent, fresh food together. If you are blinded by the superficial decor and glitz of chain eateries then this may not be for you! But if you want to experience genuine atmosphere (Used by the locals), Fresh and well prepared food, and friendly attentive service - Then Kaffivagninn is an excellent choice.

Thank you for fantastic food, service and...

This was my favourite dining spot in all of Iceland. The atmosphere is warm, and inviting, and the food was absolutely spectacular. We showed up for a packed lunchtime, but we found their service to be quick without showing any signs of short cuts.

After watching the Ainsley Netflix special, we popped in here to try the fish balls. As someone who's from Asia, I would usually think of 'fish balls' as a light snack, and not something you could make an entire meal out of, but I would urge you to give it a try as a full meal.

Kaffivagninn creates these light, fluffy, and scrumptious fishballs that melt in your mouth. It's a complete meal in and of itself, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a more fulfilling sit down experience that's...
