This was our second time at this coffee spot. The first time my fiancée stopped by for a pour-over to go. The place was quaint and cozy and the baristas were friendly enough. We decided to come back the following day after picking up pastries down the street from Braud. We ordered a pour-over for two, an oatmilk latte and a cappuccino. We’re from California and we have many local and amazing coffee shops, so I wasn’t overly impressed with my oatmilk latte. It was luke warm and just fine in my personal opinion. My fiancée did enjoy his pour over though. Now here is where, things took a turn for the worse, after sitting down and getting our coffee we wanted to eat our pastries. There was a female barista at the counter that rudely said, “We sell our own pastries, you can’t eat that here.” We would have completely understood if that was their policy, but something about her terrible attitude just completely ruined the experience for us. We quickly finished our coffee and there was a sign that said, “Dishes here,” so we were cleaning up after ourselves and putting the dishes away for them when she came out and said, “just leave it there!” again being incredibly rude and short after we were simply just trying to help out. Our experience in Iceland had been primarily positive but this place just completely ruined our morning. I didn’t get her name, and I get that people have bad days but that in no way excuses your behavior or rude attitude. Needless to say I would NOT come back. Customer service is extremely important to me and I love supporting local businesses but the whole experience truly just left a...
Read moreThe true third wave coffee shop in Reykjavík!
This is, I heard, the only café in Reykjavík that presently serves single origin espresso, which is done on a rotating, monthly (or so) basis. The current offering, as of writing, is a smooth Brazilian with with notes of chocolate and nuts, roasted lightly to perfection so that it retains some acidity, which I like. Speaking with a barista, I learned that they hope to obtain some Guatemala and Ethiopian soon, which should be exciting.
I am thoroughly satisfied with the café in every respect; the baristas are knowledgeable, exacting in their craft, and they love coffee and love talking coffee; the products themselves are excellent; the atmosphere is warm and friendly. I am confident that, in any city in the world, Reykjavík Roasters would stand its own, and the people of Reykjavík are very fortunate to have them. It is the best coffee I have tasted in Iceland after weeks of trying cafes in sundry places.
The only trouble can be the lack of seating when it is busy; as a matter of courtesy, I don't like to linger too long after buying something, but the outlets and WiFi can attract people doing "home office" at the café.
Nobody else will likely have this issue, but there has been some inconsistency when I am billed; I always order a quad espresso; other cafes generally add a double shot to a standard espresso order (and that has happened here too), but here I have also been billed for two double espressos, which is more expensive. I do not know which way is...
Read moreI really REALLY wanted to like this place. It's in an adorable building with lovely decor and cozy atmosphere. Makes you want to build a bed in the corner and call this place home. But in the end, it's a coffee shop. My base line coffee back home is making drip and stove top espresso with Cafe Bustelo (my ride or die). I came here on two separate occasions and got their drip and cafe latte. I typically drink black (i.e. No added sugar/honey) or with very little brown sugar. But drinking it black was no bueno; and adding sugar didn't do much in bringing out any particular notes. It was the opposite of bitter or sour that can be tamed with sugar. It was just lacking much of any flavor in personal opinion. I wasn't mad, just disappointed with the hype. My conclusion is only based around the two drinks I tried and can't speak for their cold brew. But considering espresso is used to make about everything on the menu, two visits were enough. Also, man the line was long and slow moving. Which I understand was due to being the best coffee shop around and being there in the morning. But waiting in line coupled with the outcome really nailed in this shop at 3 stars. If they cranked out patrons like a Starbucks I may have been inclined to give...
