I had visited this place on a couple of occasions, and hence deem it's appropriate to comment here. Firstly, as the very name goes, it's managed by Brahmins, Tamil Iyers to be precise, but of late, serving & hospitality is all managed by north Indian guys, so while serving the authentic Brahmin style can't be accepted. I had to see a nasty scene while rice was being serviced, the tray in which rice was being carried, was touched onto banana leaf and the curry which the person was eating stuck to the tray and this repeated all through. So, just in case madi (table etiquette) is expected, since it's a Brahmin styled mess, it's a big no to visit this place. Next, commenting on the taste, it's really ok ok, definitely not the veritable Iyer style, it's more of localised & customised to appease the tastes of all communities in general. Coming to worth for money, well, it's sort of touch-and-go, coz for one medium sized chapati & curry, one scoop of coloured rice / pulav, a ambvade, papad, salad, and bowl of rice, sambar, rasam & finally a small cup or curd, ₹80 I personally feel isn't worth though not costly as I have had lunch in Madurai messes wherein the same menu was a mere ₹50 and they offer not just sambar & rasam, morkolumbu (curd sambar) too and qty of rice was marginally more. My only request, when it's tagged as an Iyer Mess, kindly stick to the basics, be it Iyer taste, serving & dishes, we expect the name to be upheld, coz in that case one could drop in to any hotels, why select the brahmin style. I am not at all knocking them down, it's a...
Read moreNot very often we go all the way to Malleswaram, we went yesterday for some specific shopping. We knew we'd be there around lunch time and did our homework to figure out where we wished to have lunch. When your taste buds get unreasonably demanding in the mood to enjoy a traditional Iyer lunch treat on a banana leaf, you turn to Google for answers. Google returned a single recommendation to try Iyer Mess, a rather nondescript little down to earth eat joint in the by lanes of Malleswaram market. The reviews looked very promising. We noted that lunch is served from 11.30 am onwards so we took care not to have breakfast to keep our appetite at it's best. We found the place with not much effort, walked a few steps into the pathway and discovered this 60 year old typical Iyer mess run by an elderly couple. The place had space barely to seat 12-15 people, luckily we were just 3 and two other tables had 1 each of other customers. The place smelled of the traditional Iyer Sapadu. The banana leaves were laid, a weekday simple menu was on the cards. As onions were trading at 120/kg, we were lucky to get Paavakkai Pittalai as an affordable alternative, with Avial, Urulai Roast curry and lovely tomato rasam. You've gotto try to believe me that this simple limited menu was so heavenly that we ended up over indulging. The Iyer mama on the counter suggested that try them on a Sunday for lunch when they serve other delicacies like more kozhambu, paayasam etc., so our next Sunday brunch seems to...
Read moreIyer Mess, located in Malleshwaram, is a charming little place run by a sweet old couple. They are genuinely loving and make you feel right at home the moment you step in. They serve authentic and one of the best south indian food. The staff working there are also very polite and serve everything with a kind heart, which really adds to the overall experience.
The food itself is simply excellent. They specialize in authentic South Indian Iyer cuisine, meaning you get to taste real and traditional flavors. A typical meal is quite substantial, especially for the price. It comes with two different curries, a special kind of flavored rice, and one chapathi. Along with these, you get plain rice, the Tamil sambar, a tangy rasam, a small cup of curd, a crispy papad, and some pickle to complete your meal.
All of this, believe it or not, costs just 100 rupees. It’s a wonderful spot if you're looking for a hearty, traditional South Indian meal served with a lot of warmth and care, making it a favorite among locals looking for good, honest food.
