🍽️ Hotel Taj Mahal, Mangaluru — A Morning Symphony of South Indian Comforts In the bustling heart of Mangaluru, where tradition hums through the streets and breakfast is a sacred ritual, Hotel Taj Mahal stands as a quiet sentinel of timeless taste. Step inside, and you’re greeted not by grandeur, but by the warm familiarity of stainless steel tumblers, the aroma of roasted spices, and the gentle clatter of early risers sharing stories over steaming plates. 🥣 Vada Sambar — The Golden Embrace of Crisp and Comfort The vada arrives golden and proud, its crisp exterior giving way to a soft, spiced interior that speaks of well-balanced urad dal and deft hands. Dunked into the sambar, it transforms—absorbing the tangy tamarind, the mellow heat of green chilies, and the earthy depth of slow-cooked lentils. The sambar here isn’t just a side—it’s a soulful broth, fragrant with curry leaves and mustard seeds, that elevates the vada into something almost ceremonial. ☕ Filter Coffee — A Sip of Heritage Served in the classic steel davara set, the filter coffee is bold, aromatic, and unapologetically strong. The decoction is rich, the milk perfectly frothed, and the sugar just enough to round the edges. It’s not just a drink—it’s a pause, a moment to reflect, to watch the morning unfold. Locals sip it slowly, as if honoring a tradition passed down through generations. You don’t gulp this coffee—you converse with it. 🍮 Sheera — A Sweet Whisper of Simplicity The sheera (or kesari bath) is a gentle surprise. Soft, warm, and delicately sweet, it carries the fragrance of cardamom and the richness of ghee. Speckled with golden raisins and the occasional cashew, it’s comfort in a bowl—simple, sincere, and satisfying. It doesn’t try to impress; it simply reminds you of home. --- 🌟 Final Impressions Hotel Taj Mahal isn’t about luxury—it’s about legacy. It’s where food is memory, and every bite carries the weight of decades. The service is brisk, the ambience modest, but the flavors? They linger. In a city that’s constantly evolving, this little corner remains beautifully unchanged.

One of the oldest places to relish a delicious Mangalorean meal! Very basic, only a handful of items served hot in classic banana leaf custom - boiled rice (thick red rice), dal, rasam, thick curd, lady’s finger fry & a yam coconut curry which is their specialty. Apart from rice, you also have the option to have chapatis..extremely thin & melts in your mouth just like a rumali roti. And, like most places serving thalis, here also you get an unlimited serving of all the items. For the tangy rasam lovers alert - expect a sweeter version of rasam..Udupi style. My taste buds accepted it happily! No desert included in the meal - the only disappointment about the entire food journey at Mangalore. Though you have the option to pick it separately from the menu. What’s worth a remembrance was the yam curry cooked in coconut gravy - mildly spiced, flavourful & cooked slow for the right texture, this was the winning shot!!

One of the worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant in Mangalore. Usually I've always loved eating in restaurants in Mangalore, but Taj Mahal Hotel in Hampankatta is the only place which I've disliked the most. Just imagine eating your food and 4 guys on your left are chopping vegetables in the open without any hygiene and just chopping vegetables without a care in the world. At the back, the owner would scream on top of her voice at the cashier and other staff members, because of which the guests couldn't eat properly and had to check about what's going on . This is a note to the owner, please put aside your ego and anger and welcome the guests correctly. The food felt cold and not likeable at all. Cheaper restaurants than this place will serve way better food with lots of love and care. The owner is needs to learn some manners and respect for her guests. Never visiting this place ever again !!

Here's a review for an authentic Mangalorean pure veg breakfast and lunch hotel:

If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Mangalorean cuisine, this pure veg hotel is a gem you shouldn’t miss. From the moment you walk in, the warm and inviting ambiance, combined with the aroma of freshly cooked food, sets the stage for a delightful dining experience.

The breakfast here is simply outstanding. Whether it’s the fluffy idlis, crispy dosas, or the flavorful sambar, every dish is made with traditional recipes that bring out the best of Mangalorean flavors. The chutneys and accompaniments are equally delicious, adding that extra zing to the meal.

For lunch, the variety is impressive. The meals are wholesome and satisfying, with a perfect balance of taste and nutrition. The standout dishes like the Mangalorean-style rasam, vegetable curries, and akki rotti are bursting with authentic flavors. Each dish is prepared with fresh ingredients and seasoned with the right blend of spices that Mangalorean cuisine is known for.

The service is prompt and courteous, with staff who are always ready to ensure that you have everything you need. The cleanliness and hygiene standards are also commendable, making the dining experience even more enjoyable.

Overall, this hotel is a must-visit for anyone craving genuine Mangalorean vegetarian food. Whether for a hearty breakfast or a fulfilling lunch, it offers an experience that stays true to the rich culinary traditions...

🍽️ Original Taj Mahal Restaurant, Mangalore – Classic Taste but Cramped Space Near Milagres.

Visited what I believe is the original Taj Mahal Restaurant in Mangalore. Compared to the newer Taj outlet, this branch feels a bit cramped and busier, especially during breakfast hours. There seems to be an air-conditioned hall, but it was full when we arrived, so we had to settle in the main serving area.

By the time we reached, most of the popular breakfast items were sold out, so we went with the basics — Upma, Plain Dosa, Masala Dosa, and Vada. Everything tasted fine but nothing particularly special. Personally, I prefer the new Taj Mahal outlet, which feels more spacious, has better crowd management, and serves a few exclusive items that stand out.

This outlet still maintains that old-school Mangalore charm, but the crowded atmosphere and limited parking space near Milagres Church make it a bit inconvenient for travellers.

If you’re in or around the railway station or Milagres Church area, this is a decent stop for a quick South Indian breakfast or coffee.

💳 Payment Options: Cash, card, and digital payments are accepted.

⭐ Overall Rating: 3.8 / 5 ✅ Authentic South Indian breakfast options ✅ Quick service and digital payment support ✅ Convenient for those near Milagres or Railway Station ❌ Very crowded during mornings ❌ Difficult parking space ❌ Taste was average compared to the...
