I visited this place on Navami, 2023 with my friends and our mothers. There were 10 of us. Our first choice had been Trincas but we were denied entry as it was completely packed. Our next stop was obviously Olypub, considering the fact that it's a well-reputed establishment to eat at and it's located very close to Trincas, Tantra, Kwality and all. We had to wait for 45 minutes to get a table. 5 of us were seated at once but the plates and glasses that were used to serve the guests before us hadn't been cleared. Our mums had to wait another 15-20 minutes in the corner before they were seated. We recieved just one menu which went to our mothers' table of course. They were seated right beside us and so, we were exchanging the menus all throughout our time there. The staff there was very rude and unmannered. The waiter who stocked the tissues for us didn't ask for the holder nor did he grab it himself. He stretched out his hand and waved his palm back and forth in front our faces several times till we finally caught the hint and handed him what he wanted. We were left speechless. It took us some time to process what had happened and honestly, none of us were ever treated this way at any other restaurants that we went to eat at. We finally ordered appetizers which comprised chilli chicken and fried chicken. The chilli chicken wasn't worthy of it's title, nor was the fried chicken. The chilli chicken pieces were hard, too much of tomato sauce had been used in the dish. The fried chicken was basically just something similar to chicken pakora but not quite there. It had chat masala sprinkled all over and was served with a side of french fries and tossed vegetables for the sake of making it look fancy. Everything was either way overseasoned or bland. Our mothers ordered alcohol and we got Pepsi and 7up. The staff didn't even bother to pour it for us. They simply gave us glasses and we had to pour the drinks ourselves. The plates and glasses smelled eggy like they hadn't been properly washed. The only thing we actually enjoyed was their signature dish, Chicken Ala Kiev which had butter oozing out of it when we cut. We didn't have dinner ultimately at the restaurant. We shifted after finishing the appetizers aave the drinks. The bill amounted to about 2500/- We recieved only 2 straws instead of 5 and they took 30 minutes to bring the straws, mind you. The cutlery was also brought out much after the dishes were served. Wouldn't recommend going there unless it's...
Read moreAh, Olypub – the place where Kolkata’s nostalgia comes chilled with soda and a wedge of lime. Nestled right in the heart of Park Street, this iconic watering hole isn’t just a pub – it’s a time capsule soaked in Old Monk and legacy.
Established in 1947 (yes, just like our Independence), Olypub is older than most Bollywood family feuds. It has aged not like wine, but like a fine whisky – smoky, strong, and slightly rough around the edges. And that’s its charm!
The Ambience? Think peeling walls, dim lights, no-nonsense service, and a crowd that ranges from broke college poets to retired professors quoting Tagore between sips. No pretense, no Instagrammable plating – just glorious chaos and legendary beef steaks (so famous they deserve their own Aadhaar card). And let’s not forget the ultra-generous pegs of liquor, which have made Olypub the original 'happy hour' for decades.
Interesting Sip-Sized Facts: It’s one of the oldest running pubs in Kolkata, serving since the British had just packed up. The beef steak, served with soft buttered bread, has achieved near-cult status. Many swear it's the best in town – unless they’ve had three pegs, in which case, everything’s the best! Olypub doesn’t play music – because here, conversation is the only playlist. Prices are so retro, you’ll check the bill twice to confirm it’s not a typo from 1997.
Sure, it’s not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling tea. If you’re looking for mood lighting, artisanal cocktails, and a DJ dropping bass, walk on. But if you're after soul, stories, and steaks with a side of strong drinks and stronger opinions — Oly is your promised land.
In the words of a wise old regular, “You don’t go to Oly....

We started off by ordering 2 beers , Carlsberg Smooth and Budweiser Magnum both of 650 ml as the 330 ml were not available. Those were served chilled , no complaints at all, accompanied with really crisp munchies . Without making any mistake we opted for the Chicken Ala Kiev as we were aware about its popularity and we saw each and every table surrounding us had the dish on and yes totally worth it . We were served with two piping hot chicken Ala Kiev , the butter oozed out making a delectable sauce with the mashed potatoes and peas served alongside on the plate.
Following that we ordered a Chicken Steak with Grilled Vegetables, the quantity served was wholesome for 2 people. Thick Chicken steak ,cooked with onions , a slice of pineapple added just on top it , leading to that play of sweet and savoury on your tongue and lathered in a flavoursome sauce .
Each and every dish was curated with perfection, we ended the feast by ordering another beer , Bira white, which I'm not a fan of , it had a synthetic taste to it .
Along with the amazing dishes and drinks, the ambience stood out, it was a bit expensive but the great quality and the comfortable atmosphere make it worth it .
Our bill came down to 1947/- for 2 people.
