⭐⭐⭐Tl;dr version: The focus here is on re-inventing old dishes and putting a new eclectic spin on them. It’s quite interesting. The food doesn’t focus on those familiar bold Punjabi flavours, but instead offers an experience that those with a penchant for subtle tastes will enjoy.⭐⭐⭐
📌 What we had:
🔶 Dhaniya Tamatar ka Shorba:(4/5)
Solid, good tomato soup. No complains here. It’s served with a side of Kasundi Mathri, which is Rajasthani crispy-flaky snack. Not really my favourite, but I guess a lot of people enjoy them. Plus, they go well with the soup instead of standard breadsticks (The Indian version I suppose xD)
🔶 Mushroom Bhune Pyaaz ka shorba:(5/5)
This, is the soup you want to get if you’re visiting this place. Amazing flavour and texture, but that’s not all. The magic begins when they pour it into your bowl at the table. You get to see all the beautiful pieces of mushroom, herbs and crisp bread as the soup is being poured on top of it. What follows is the beautiful umami flavour of mushrooms that you only get when they're cooked to perfection.
🔶 Black Sesame Chicken Tikka with sesame ash:(3/5)
This, was actually a miss for me. The presentation of the dish was quite beautiful, and the edible ash added quite a unique texture, but I wasn’t really a fan of the flavour too much.
Unfortunately, I forgot to note down the names of the drinks we got, but they were both really good. And, if you feel lost, just ask the servers their recommendations. They really know the menu well.
🔶 Hand Pulled Butter Chicken with Smoked bread Crumbs:(5/5)
This dish really knocked it out of the park. The gravy was so rich, with shaved smoked breadcrumbs on top. The subtle layering of flavors just made this dish a joy to eat. The quantity wasn’t too much, but should be sufficient if two share, provided you’re not light handed with the rest of your meal. The smoky flavour of the bread, the amazingly soft hand pulled chicken (seriously, felt like it melted in my mouth!), and the richness of the gravy accentuate each other brilliantly, making this dish a match made in heaven. Oh and on the presentation front, it’s a hole in one again. What can I say, I guess I just like people pouring stuff into bowls in front of me (weird xD) .
🔶 Saagwala Paneer with kasuri Methi Paratha:(2/5)
To be honest, I’m not really a fan. The gravy was good, but the panner wasn’t exactly the softest and had somewhat of a bite to it. Nothing dealbreaking, however ironical that these are the same people that made the aforementioned butter chicken that quite literally melts in your mouth. The kasuri methi paratha was good however. A different choice than usual.
🔶 Amritsari Chole, Mini Bhatura:(3/5)
The standard fare, nothing really special, but does the job. Don’t go in expecting those giant Kailash Parbat type bhaturas though, or you’d just be setting yourself up for disappointment.
🔶 Ras Malai Tres Leches, Carrot Cream and Rose Petal Net:(4/5)
This is the time when you might want to rely on the serving staff for a recommendation. Seriously. A cursory glance through the menu and you’ll see that all the deserts aren’t the usual run of the mill but something very novel. This one was a recommendation from our server, and boy, it did not disappoint. Creamy, but not too sweet. Just the way I like my desserts. The serving dish did make it a little bit of a messy affair to eat however.
📌 Verdict:
I can’t say I’m too big of a fan of the food this restaurant serves. I won’t forgo going to a dhaba for this place, but I definitely would say that I’d visit again, to try out the remaining dishes I couldn’t try (especially the desserts!), and if for nothing else, than the sheer joy of watching people pour dishes in bowls on my table (I’m a...
Read moreFarzi Cafe - A place known for its outstanding service, impeccable food, masterpiece drinks and of course Jiggs and Zorawar Kalra. This mid-ranged resto-bar serves some of the most amazing fusion food and homely style dishes that are native to North Indians. Nicely located in a corner of Oberoi Mall's food court, this is a class apart place. I visited here on a weekday noon with my father and we had an amazing time. From so many tantalizing and interesting dishes to a very courteous staff, everything helped us have a a beautiful memory of this place.
*Appetizers *Tempura Prawns with Nimboo Mirch Air: Fresh tiger prawns, batter fried and tossed in delicious red gravy. It was slightly on the spicier side. Talking about the foam or the air, it was soooooo good. Lemony flavour and when it disappears in your mouth, it leaves a spicy taste. - 5/5
*Rajasthani Pyaaz ki Kachori: Mamma mia, this was outstanding! Nice and smooth potato and onion masala filled in crumbly and crisp (khasta) cover. Not at all oily. Loved the red potato reduction and chutneys that were topped on these balls of heaven! - 5/5
*Black Sesame Chicken Tikka: Something very new and unusual, something that can come only from the kitchen of Zorawar Kalra. Tender chicken tikka chunks on the inside and crispy black sesame-charcoal coating on the outside. The flavours were nicely balanced with the flavourful sesame mayo. Although it was a simple dish altogether, these guys made it perfectly, just like a masterpiece dish. - 5/5
*Grainy Mustard Fish Tikka: Just one of those rawas fishes with intense mustard flavour in ever bite of the fish. The best part was that the fish was flavourful even on the very core of the pieces. Too good! Loved the texture, loved the taste. And of course, mustard mayo and green chutney were outstanding! - 5/5
*Dal Chawl Arancini: I can say that this was my favourite dish. But all of them were so so good that it's difficult to decide! Homestyle dal rice made into balls, coated in papad and fried. The tomato onion salsa at the bottom reminded me of homely masalas. Green chutney mayo and the second topic stole the show! One small arancini ball and so many flavours together. Difficult to do, but the chef here achieved it thoroughly. - 5/5
*Mains *Chicken Tikka Masala: I am sure this was a home recipe. It tasted entirely different from the typical CTM you get anywhere else. It tasted like my ghar ka bharta but with biiig chicken tikka chunks in it! Too good. Onions, tomatoes and base masala was coarsely chopped and cooked nicely. The dish was amazing! Also, the crispy naan that came along was yum. Crisp yet soft, a bit cheesy, and non-rubbery. - 5/5
*Chole Mini Bhature: Although this dish was inspired from Amritsar, the taste of chole was totally different. It was way better than Amritsar. I am not a fan of intense chole flavours that those dhabas and restaurants serve. Really loved the mildness and simplicity of this chole dish. Authentic yet light flavours made it amazing. And yes, bhature or puris were so soft and didn't become rubbery even though we had them after a long time. Too too good! - 5/5
*Desserts *Ras Malai Tres Leche: I won't talk about this one, all the readers HAVE TO give it a try (and then fall in love). Complete heaven this dessert was. - 100/5
