You’ll come across quite a few Udipi restaurants situated in Bandra, however what Bandra truly lacked is the authentic South-Indian cuisine, and that’s where Madras Diaries fills the gap.

Being avid lovers of the traditional South-Indian cuisine, we just couldn’t wait to see what Madras Diaries has in store for us. Firstly, they presented us with their tray of 4 signature condiments – beetroot chutney, bell pepper chutney, pineapple raita and a tomato pickle. Here’s the brief of our meal:

MOCKTAILS

  1. Tender Coconut Water – Refreshing tender coconut water served in a glass. Could have added to the appeal, if served in the coconut itself along with a straw.

  2. Watermelon Cooler – This mocktail was a blend of lemon, mint leaves, crushed watermelon pieces and watermelon juice served chilled. Similar to a mojito, this one was absolutely refreshing and was worth every sip. Highly recommended.

  3. Sitaphal Milk – A milkshake made with a mixture of custard apple, milk and sugar. It did have some custard apple pieces in it.

  4. Kiwi Sunrise – Definitely the best mocktail we tried here. Crushed kiwi along with sprite, lemon, mint leaves and cubes of ice, served chilled. We just couldn’t stop sipping on this mocktail. Highly recommended.

QUICK BITES

  1. Kerai Vada – Deep-fried crisp golden brown vadas made from a combination of daal’s, spinach, curry leaves and other condiments. It was served alongside a coconut chutney. Warm and delicious. Highly recommended.

  2. Broccoli Vada – Well, I’ve never tasted vada’s as good as this one before! It was light, fluffy, crisp and served warm. The vada had the spiciness from the green chilis as well as tiny broccoli florets. The seasonings were on point. Served along with a sambhar.

MAINS

  1. Lunch Menu (Thali) – Their lunch thali is a loaded plate filled with a great variety of dishes and we could immediately see that it is absolute value for money. It consisted of steamed white rice, curd, mini fryums, vada, sambhar, rasam, 4 gravies – thick daal gravy, mushroom gravy, paneer gravy and a mixed vegetable gravy and a rice payasam as dessert. Every element on the thali was cooked to utmost perfection. Loved it. Highly recommended.

  2. Bisi-bele-godhi – Loved the texture of this dish. The seasonings were on fleek and it is just the type of comfort dish that makes you happy. It was served alongside a pickle and paper-thin pappads. Highly recommended.

DESSERTS

  1. Litchi Payasam – Litchi flavoured sweetened milk with a generous amount of litchi pieces. Tasted divine. It was light and easy on the palate. A perfect dessert after a heavy meal. Loved every bit of it. Highly recommended.

  2. Madras Diaries Special Bread Halwa – A thick halwa made from brown bread, brown sugar, cashew nuts, raisins and ghee. A rich, wholesome and filling dessert which is absolutely sinful and indulgent. A dessert worth coming back for, and one which shouldn’t be missed. Highly recommended.

On the whole, we completely enjoyed and relished our lunch here and we’re glad we opted to try out...

Visited this amazing place which serves authentic South Indian cuisine. They have 2 sections AC and Non-AC. Combining both i believe it can serve around 50 people at a time. The ambiance is very delightful, Specially i liked all the decor in Non-AC section better than the AC one. Soothing south Indian music is playing continuously to set the mood according to the theme. Being a one to eat chatakedar khana, I was skeptical about this place. But i was wrong, This place has some amazing food with amazing taste(Even for me :P).

We started our order with "Idli Platter", In which we are served with one portion of 4 different idlis. We were served with Rawa Idli, Tahttu Idli, Ragi Idli, Navdhaniya Idli. Navdhaniya and Rawa idli were the one's i liked more. Sambhar was a bit different then regular places, But was definitely better.

To go with our food we ordered couple of drinks "Spiced Lemon with Basil Seed" & "Kokum Cooler". Kokum cooler was definitely a killer. Perfectly tangy, Loved this drink.

After idli it was time for Vada, So tried "Vazhaipoo Vada", Vazhaipoo is Banana Flower. It was also good, It is only served with Coconut chutney. For non-south indian's it would probably feel similar to dal vada's .

In Dosa's we tried, "Kara Dosa". Which is more like a sada dosa. But with a mixture of spicy podi(powder mixture of ground dry spices that typically contains dried chilis, urad dal, chickpeas, and sesame seeds) powder.

After trying this variation of normal south indian food we eat, We were ready for actual south indian food. So ordered "Red rice appam", Which i can define as Dosa style Rotis. It was served with coconut based raita kind of gravy. Didn't enjoy that gravy much, But it was rich with coconut. Appam's were very good.

Then ordered "Cheese Chilli Jalapeno Idli in Masala Fondue", This was 2nd most favorite dish of the day. By name i feel it's a fusion of south indian dish idli. In this we get mini idli's(More than 10) with masala fondue. Must try this dish.

Before moving to the dessert, We tried "Kothu Parotta". Which was by far the best dish of the evening. Popular food from Tamilnadu. It's a crushed parotta(Roti) mixed with kurma. Served with Raita. Everything about this dish was awesome. A must must try.

Also tried Masala Buttermilk, While my friend had Masala Tea. Both of which were perfectly made. So next time i visit this place. Kothu Parotta and Masala Tea is a definite for me.

Finished our meal with "Madras Diaries Special Bread Halwa", which was very tempting and a perfect dessert for me. Halwa was very delicious and with a lot of dry-fruits. Loved it. This was our 3rd choice for the dessert, Since the first 2 were not available we came to this one. But we were glad :P.

The place actually doesn't have any downside other than prices, But being the category of this place "Fine Dine - Authentic South Indian place", The prices are reasonable.

Recommendations :- Kokum Cooler, Kara Dosa, Cheese Chilli Jalapeno Idli in Masala Fondue, Kothu Parotta & Madras Diaries...

Madras Diaries, as the name suggests and describes how the place is gonna be, a traditional and authentic madras styled restaurant. Located in Bandra, in a lane behind Stomach and Copetto. Elegant and kerala styled decor upon entering. Even the entrance door is designed the traditional way. A soft keralite music playing in the background, will already make you feel you’re in south. I was greeted with a smile by Prabhakar who attended us and served us for the evening. Visited on a Wednesday evening, it was empty at the time but gradually there were guests flooding in and occupying tables within the next hour or so. I am a big fan of south indian food, idli sambhar being my evening saviour snack and filter coffee. I was extremely excited for my visit here and was completely satisfied leaving the place with a smile. Being a manglorian, I was aware of some of the food items served here and was greatly looking forward to experiencing their hospitality. Drinks * Filter Coffee : Creamy rich filter coffee. No other coffee can beat theirs. And I ended up having 2 cups. Served in the traditional small glass. * Orange Juice : Freshly squeezed orange juice, which was naturally sweet and refreshing. Food * Before your meal, you are served with 4 types of chutney. Tomato, Rich gourd and Beetroot chutney and the fourth is a pineapple sweet curd. * Idli Platter : Comes with 4 types of idli, plain idli, ragi idli, rawa idli and navadhaniya idli. All were amazing and I personally loved the navadhaniya idli which was damn tasty. * Appam & Vegetable Stew : Appam, a south indian type of dosa, made of rice, flat but more fluffy and tasty. Served with veg stew, which was creamy and coconuty. The combination is worth trying. I prefer having the appam with the stew or even with the chutney & sambhar or coffee/tea. * Kara Paniyaram Chettiyar Milagi Podi Tods : This is a type of vada which is cooked slightly different from your regular vada. Cooked with their spices, onions, and coconut. Extremely tasty being cooked in ghee. * Kothu Parotta with Raita : Malabari parotta which is broken in pieces and cooked with vegetables and lil spices. Served with raita which makes it super Delicious. Enormous quantity filling enough for two. Desserts * Sapota Kesari : It’s like a sheera which is made of chiku only. Extremely tasty, not so sweet and topped with shredded almonds. * Lychee Payasam : Payasam with Lychee flavour and also lychee pieces. Again not too sweet and delicious. I would definitely wanna come back to try and explore more from their menu. A heart warming place indeed!! ❤️

Recommendations :- Kokum Cooler, Kara Dosa, Cheese Chilli Jalapeno Idli in Masala Fondue, Kothu Parotta & Madras Diaries Special Bread Halwa
