We had the pleasure of dining at 'Mahabelly,' a charming Malayali restaurant that promised an authentic culinary experienc as i m forced to rewrite this review again As a fan of Kerala cuisine, My taste buds were eager to savor the distinct flavors and aromatic spices that make Malayali cuisine so diverse.
As it was our first dining experience the friendly staff greeted us with a genuine smile, enhancing the overall dining experience. The menu boasted a variety of mouthwatering dishes, making it difficult to choose where to begin. quench my thirst, I opted for a refreshing lime soda, which provided a perfect balance to the bold and spicy flavors of the meal. The tanginess of the lime combined with the effervescence of the soda was a delightful accompaniment throughout the dining experience.
I started my culinary journey with the classic combination of porotta and beef fry. The porottas were soft and flaky, but somehow i felt it was made to cater the northies as it tastes more like a lachcha paratha, perfectly complementing the spicy and tender beef fry with thenga kothu. Each bite was an explosion of flavors that left me wanting more. It was evident that the chef had mastered the art of preparing this quintessential Malayali dish.
Next up was the prawns roast, which turned out to be a true highlight. The prawns were impeccably cooked and coated with a rich blend of aromatic spices. The combination of the caramelized onions, curry leaves, and fiery red chili was simply divine. It was a true testament to the culinary expertise of the chef, who managed to strike the perfect balance of flavors.
The chicken curry at 'Mahabelly' was another standout dish. The succulent chicken pieces were immersed in a thick, luscious gravy that had absorbed the essence of coconut milk and a harmonious blend of spices.
For dessert, I indulged in the traditional rice payasam. The velvety texture, subtle sweetness, and the hint of cardamom made it a satisfying end to a fantastic meal, and above all it was served hot. The payasam was served warm and topped with crunchy caramelized nuts, adding a delightful contrast of textures.
We really missed a 'mallu playlist'. Overall, my experience at 'Mahabelly' was a delightful journey through the flavors of Kerala. The restaurant showcased an authentic taste of Malayali cuisine, with dishes that truly reflected the culinary heritage of the region. The attentive staff, cozy ambiance, and the outstanding quality of the food left a lasting impression on me. I would highly recommend 'Mahabelly' to anyone looking to explore the rich and diverse flavors of Kerala in a warm and welcoming environment. The food made us skip taking pictures.

Read moreI have never really written a Google review before ....but I can't help myself. I am a keralite and the place was highly dissapointing especially the food. I don't know if it's the day we went but overall it was such a bad experience. I went along with another friend in order to make her try some authentic malayali food...and god was I embarrassed. The things we ordered include chicken vartaarichide, roast, Malabar porotta, chicken biriyani and kappa.. The porotta was dry and tough and it was not the usual flaky softness it is The meat used for the roast was SO TOUGH so tough ....and so unnecessarily sweet so was the biriyani which the manager or the "captain" himself agreed to and apologized....and one of My favorite dishes in the world is chicken vartaaruchude ....it tasted nothing NOTHING like the authentic original kind.....we hardly ate anything and packed 85 percent of it to not waste food.
Malayali food is supposed to be spicy and have hints of coconut, it was bland and SO SWEET ...I don't even get it...especially the biriyani. It was such a let down....I was going to take her to a malayali restaurant literally 5 mins away but I stopped by inspired by the ok tested video they did and the crowd. The food was below average and it saddens me to think that they might be serving this to non malayali people in the name of authentic kerala food...idk if it's the absence of the owner but God knows that this is not keralite food. I think I saw a few other complaining and they very much seemed like malayalis aswell. Maybe it was a bad day ...but there definitely should be a standard.
Not to mention after I complained the kind captain served us free payasam of the day, not only did it fail at redemption but made it far worse ...I had half a spoon and I left it ...it literally hurt my pride that they serve this I the name of payasam it tasted like custard with ghee in it ...idk man ....it was so so bad. So disappointing...I honestly thought the prices were fine at first but for the quality of food they serve, absolutely not ....it's not only a rip off but borderline deception. The service was also pretty bad ...I had to wait 15 mins for the cheque and another 20 to get the change, I called them several times. I get the place was busy but this is just inappropriate...this is a very passionate paragraph I wrote in great fury and in no way am I...
Read moreVisited the restaurant with great expectation, but was disappointed. To start with,
There was no parking provided by the restaurant. I was asked to park my car around 300 mts away on a paid basis.
Kerala Meals which was the basic item is not avaialble. You need to order each item separately with heavy prices for each items. I read the response from the owner to a similar review 9 months ago stating that they would start the meals in a month, but no luck.
The quality of the food was not bad, but it could not match with the standard of the price they charged. I ordered Aleppy Fish Curry and red rice. The fish curry was priced Rs 550, but neither it had sufficient quantity nor quality to justify that pricing.
I visited the restaurant hoping to have a meal, but as it was not available, I thought of having some snacks. I was surprised to see that our own Pazham Pori (banana fritters) was listed under the desert with some honey added to it and priced for Rs. 220. It was hard for me to accept that our daily snack Pazham Pori could be so expensive.
None of the staffs available there was a Mallu nor had any far connection with Kerala for me to to explain them that this is not how an authentic Aleppy Fish Curry would taste.
I visited this restaurant with my wife and daughter during our All India Trip. We had been to different types of restaurants during this trip including those in Bangalore & Mumbai. But this one seemed a far distant relative of Kerala with no proper roots. It could be a rare compromise meal for those who could not visit Kerala but still carry those naustaulgic memories of Kerala dishes, but not for others. With the kind of pricing especially, I wonder even Lord Mahabali could afford a proper meal from here.
