During lunch time, this place can become quite crowded. This is our second time dining here, following our previous visit in 2019. As the Canggu area has become increasingly popular, we have noticed that the restaurant attracts more visitors than before.
If you plan on arriving by vehicle, please note that it is advisable to bring a motorbike (or bicycle), as parked cars can impede traffic on the road. Despite the two floors, the seating area is limited, and the absence of air conditioning (just fan) may cause some discomfort in warmer weather.
Fortunately, the menu boasts a diverse range of options, all of which we found to be delicious. However, when compared to our first visit, we did notice that the food portions have become smaller, such as with the corn fritters. Nonetheless, we understand that this may be due to the high cost of basic food ingredients in recent times. On our next visit, I might consider ordering double portions.
Objectively, the price of the food remains affordable, and we can attest to the delectable taste of each dish we ordered. As I write this review, I am reminded of the mouth-watering flavors that we savored during our meal. In all honesty, I would love to be Varuna's neighbor, so that I could enjoy their delicious and affordable food without having to...
Read moreExcellent, fresh Indonesian food where you can pick your own dishes. We ate this a few times at lunchtime when the food was freshly made. In general in Southeast asia, we avoid eating pre-cooked food, laid out in the partially covered shelves in non air conditioned places, at dinner time. The food may spoil if unsold for hours.
Excellent value for money especially the big pieces of fried chicken. Sambal beans with lemongrass was delicious, so was the crispy tempe. Perfect way to end off lunch in the heat is a scoop of delicious homemade gelato in their shop on site at the corner.
If you are not familar with the typical dishes you can pick, try to learn ahead as the servers may just tell you what the main ingredients are in English- eg chicken, fish.
Highly recommend for authentic food at good value. Warning- very hot during the day as there are limited wall fans. Bring your own...

I had a terrible experience at Varuna Warung. Two girls were standing there ignoring me when I asked for help, and when one finally decided to serve me, her attitude was extremely rude and came across in a very racist manner. On top of that, I was clearly overcharged for my food. After I handed her 100,000 IDR, she was supposed to return 45,000 IDR, but instead used the typical Bali scam tactic, claiming she had no change and telling me to “take something else” instead. To make it worse, she offered me just one tiny fried shrimp for 5,000 IDR in the most disrespectful manner possible. This place is a total scam. The service was not just unfriendly but insulting, and the dishonesty in handling money is unacceptable. Avoid this warung if you don’t want to be ripped off and...
