I haven't heard of this restaurant until very recently when a friend wanted to check out a Japanese restaurant around the area. So we came and we didn't really expect much to begin with and came with a blank slate – open to whatever they have to offer.
As we came, we asked what they recommend and they said many people like the sushi rolls, the sashimi, the rice dishes, and the curry rice. Intrigued by the curry rice, many of us ordered various kinds of katsu curry rice dishes. Lo and behold after ordering, the server came back and said ALL the curries are out of stock. So we were told to order other things in the menu.
As we browsed thru the menu, I ordered a few things that caught my eye. I ordered the chawanmushi, a zaru soba, a salmon sashimi, a chahan rice (chicken fried rice), a niku udon, and a chicken kaarage.
The chawanmushi wasn't properly done (the egg wasn't sifted as it is supposed to and the toppings were messily thrown on top after the egg was fully cooked) so the texture was not great.
The zaru soba was lukewarm and was sprinkled with a few chopped blocks of ice on top. It had no bite to it and the dipping sauce was pretty much too flavorless to help save the already dying dish.
The salmon sashimi was actually quite decent, although it is still not cut into thinner slices like they are traditionally cut. The plating was also a little annoying because the garnish at the bottom keeps sticking to the sticky sashimi when you pick it up with the chopsticks.
The chicken chahan (fried rice) was bland and was not authentic in any way. It tasted like fried rice you would get at a random chinese takeout in the middle of midwest America, but without any flavor. The chicken on top was dry amd bland. It left me wondering if I should've eaten plain white rice with soy sauce instead.
The chicken kaarage was also very very bland and flavorless. The outer layer wasn't adequately fried, giving yellowish color instead of a nice golden brown that kaarages are supposed to have. It wasn't crispy enough and the chicken within the fried coating was dry and not juicy at all.
The niku udon was alright. The udon was cooked well and the texture was very good. However this pleasant surprise was cut short after tasting the beef. The beef was tough and overcooked. It felt like I was chewing on a dried up rubber band.
But... at least they give you free watermelons at the end.
Overall, this is perhaps one of the worst Japanese restaurants I've ever been to. Terribly disappointed. The only good thing out of this place is that they have quite great interiors and they have arcade games placed all over the restaurant. So if you like taking wonderful pictures with good lighting while eating overpriced garbage, you're welcomed to...
Read moreFelt bored after work so I decided to hop to this restaurant for a refresher as the reviews here are pretty decent. Sadly the food just didn’t click, for me everything just tasted… bland.
Tenzaru Soba: 3/5. I ordered Tenzaru Soba and Salmon Sushi (raw nigiri style) with cold ocha for drink. I know soba is supposed to taste bland but the dipping sauce/mentsuyu is completely tasteless. I’ve had soba both in Japan and local restos few times before and nothing felt as tasteless as this. The only saving grace is that the assorted tempura is pretty good as it wasn’t oily with standard items such as prawn, squash, carrot, and eggplant.
Salmon Sushi: 3,5 / 5. It tasted ok, just your ordinary salmon nigiri with local Japanese resto standard I guess. The salmon cuts were pretty thick and melty, but not really memorable.
Cold ocha: 2/5. It was literally watered down completely to the point I barely tasted the signature leafy green taste of ocha.
Overall it’s a 3 out of 5 experience for me. Service is so-so, waiters were polite enough yet a bit too preoccupied with themselves on their station as I had to press the order button 3 times before they finally came to my table 😅 Granted I had the furthermost seat far away from the waiter station but come on, the resto wasn’t packed at all for that to happen.
Oh and I don’t know why but the place felt extremely humid when I was there even though (again) I sat far away from the kitchen. Heck the weather outside is cooler as it just rained a few hours ago and this IS Jakarta we’re talking about.
Would I recommend this place? No, I’d say better look for real Japanese restaurant chains like Oo*a for similar price point, yet miles ahead in...
Read moreMidori is a Japanese food restaurant that has several outlets in Jakarta. I have been to Midori's outlet in Kelapa Gading that has smaller and more private space rather than this one. The vibes is still calm with low lighting, long wood tables and wood chairs make this ambiance is suitable for a romantic dinner 😉
The parking space is available in this restaurant itself. When we enter this restaurant, we will see Midori Coffee. There is one special thing which is the game machine that we could play by purchasing the coins.
They provide variant of Japanese foods, such as sushi, salad, udon, ramen, bento, and many more.
During the pandemic, they do temperature checking, require everybody to wear a face mask, and physical distancing on each table.
Here are what we tried :
Chuka Lidako Gunkan (IDR 30,000) 2 pcs of fresh sushi with the tasty baby octopus. Recommended!
Baked Salmon (IDR 46,000) The grilled aburi salmon along with the potato salad in a volcano sauce. This one tastes good as well. Recommended!
Spicy Tori Karaage (IDR 48,000) Boneless fried chicken karage sprinkled with chilli flakes and served with chilli mayo sauce. The taste isn't spicy.
Katsu Curry Ramen (IDR 92,000) This one comes in a big bowl with huge portion. Suitable for sharing among 2 persons. Thin noodles served with carrot, mushrooms, green onions, white sesame, boneless breadcrumbs-coated chicken in a curry sauce. Unfortunately, the curry sauce is too thin and the curry taste isn't that strong at all.
Lemon Juice (IDR 26,000) The pure lemon juice with its sour taste. We could add on the sugar syrup and request for the...
