Terrible, stale food!!!!
I saw all the good reviews and thought I'd chance it for dinner even though mostly foreigners go there... Bad mistake!
All of the fish products were stale, from the sate lilit to the grilled fish. We left half of the grilled fish uneaten because it was just not fresh and smelled bad. As an Indonesian who's had plenty of local fish in life, that's saying a lot. Even the foreigner in the group wouldn't touch the fish after sampling it, he could tell it wasn't fresh and nobody was in a hurry to get sick.
Sambal matah was dry and unappealing..I don't know what Balinese establishment can even screw up the most basic of their chillis.
The curry vegetables that came in a set would have been a nice except the coconut milk had started to sour. At this point, with two really smelly fish dishes and a soured curried vegetable, I started to worry that I've basically brought my entire family here to get food poisoning at some ridiculously high price.
At one point, my mum spat out the fish sate lilit because she had a whiff of cockroach in it. We Indonesians can smell a cockroach from a mile off, so it was really unnerving. I was on edge the whole dinner after that because I really was worried everyone would get sick - we'll see.
So summary of food: Rendang - sweet and bland Fish sate lilit - completely unsavoury and not fresh that the sauce couldn't even hide it Chicken sate lilit - the only yummy thing on the menu. Soft and tender and flavourful Grilled fish - very stale fish that the sauce couldn't even hide it Curried vegetables - coconut milk had soured Curried prawns - ok nothing special. I've lost my appetite at this point because I was worried every bite would bring me closer to spending hours on the toilet Pecel - ok, nothing special. The peanut sauce is subpar Sambal matah - dry and unappealing and nothing like the usual sambal matah
Expensive since it's targeted at foreigners and shockingly bad quality. I would have forgiven the sub par flavour if at least food was fresh. It is not and I do not trust the hygiene and quality standards of this...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Raja that truly exceeded my expectations. From the moment we arrived, the ambiance was inviting, with traditional decor that beautifully blended with modern touches. The atmosphere was vibrant yet relaxed, making it the perfect setting for a delightful meal.
The menu was impressive, featuring a wide variety of Balinese dishes alongside some creative twists on traditional favorites. We started with the Gado-Gado salad, which was fresh and flavorful, with a perfect balance of crunchy vegetables and a rich peanut sauce. It set a great tone for the meal ahead.
For the main course, I chose the Bebek Betutu, a traditional Balinese dish of slow-cooked duck marinated in a fragrant blend of spices. The duck was incredibly tender and packed with flavor, served with a side of coconut rice that complemented it beautifully. My dining companion opted for the Sate Lilit, which was a delightful mix of minced meat and spices wrapped around lemongrass skewers, grilled to perfection. Every bite was bursting with flavor!
We couldn’t resist trying a few desserts, and the Pisang Goreng (fried bananas) were a highlight. They were crispy on the outside and sweet on the inside, served with a warm coconut sauce that was simply divine.
The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, offering excellent recommendations and ensuring we had everything we needed throughout the meal. Their warm hospitality made the experience even more enjoyable.
In summary, this Balinese restaurant is a hidden gem that offers a fantastic menu with authentic flavors and a warm, inviting atmosphere. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the rich culinary traditions of Bali. I can’t wait to return and explore more of their...
Read moreHad a great 3 course sharing dinner here last night .
And I couldn’t believe how good it was.
The appetizer "ayam sisit sambal matah" I thought it was amazing, especially the extra pedas satay lilit.
Next course is " soto ayam " Kinda clear chicken soup , the brotg is not too thick, and the spices are just enough, not to light and not to thick, authentic exactly the way i like.
The grill jimbaran prawn & fish is the champ here !!!! The version I had was nice and salty, and had the most incredible grill fire roasted flavor of just about any grilled dish I’ve ever had.
not to be forgetton as i have to highlighted the tum ayam and the opor ayam , the chicken itself was incredibly well marbled, not too fatty, but with a great ratio so it was still juicy and succulent. and all those chickens dish was amazing.
Weda & Ari was our waitress. Extremely polite, knowledgable and very friendly.
