Upon entrance, we had the pleasure of being greeted and seated by a phenomenal woman named Sinéad. She made lovely conversation regarding our travels from and residency in the United States. After being seated, we ordered our drinks and perused the brunch and lunchtime menu. Our drinks arrived, we ordered our meals with a few helpful tips from Sinéad, and were left to enjoy our conversation and to observe the overall decor and ambiance of the restaurant. As I was glancing around, my eyes took in the brightly colored spines of the Brother Hubbard cookbook sitting across from me on the bar. When Sinéad returned with our plates, I asked about the cookbook, explained my parents' interest in BH(N) from a show by the name of Somebody Feed Phil, and I kid you not, the rest is history. The owner, Garrett Fitzgerald, was IN the store and Sinéad set out on the mission of having a cookbook signed for me to give my parents. There are no words to describe my appreciation for her kindness and consideration towards my parents and myself. I can't thank Mr. Fitzgerald enough either as my parents collect cookbooks and he was considerably busy the day we visited. Now, onto the food...Our dishes were out of this world. I walked in with the understanding from Phil (based on commentary from the tv show) that this place was not going to disappoint. But in tasting our meals and the sweet treats we had from the bakery as dessert, this restaurant blew our minds and went way above any expectations I had held walking in. The collection of flavors in one dish was simply marvelous. I took delight in breaking my softly poached eggs. The bacon was so flavorful and different in taste from the bacon I've had here in the States. The desserts were filling (we shared 3 among us) and each presented a different profile that held it's own from the others. I really can't say enough about Brother Hubbard (North). I maintain it was the combination of flavors, presentation, customer service, and all-around positive energy that made our time there truly one of relaxation while enjoying the simple act of refueling our bodies. We walked out of there ready to enjoy all that our day brought. Thank you, Sinéad and Garrett! You made Brother Hubbard (North) one of the largest highlights of our trip...
Read moreVery "meh" experience compared to other brunch places I've been to.
We booked a table in advance but when we arrived, no one asked about the booking and when we told them we were made clear that we won't be getting a table before people before us that did not book. In a way that's fair, but in that case cancel the booking if it's to disregard it all together once your customers arrive. Would not have chosen to go at this place if I hadn't booked.
Took a good 10 minutes before we got to order. It was busy so we did not mind. We did mind that our order was taken after several others that came in after us. We know the waitress had nothing to do with it and made the best she could with what she had, but again, not great.
We got served the wrong food, and no one even offered us to actually get the food we ordered. They asked the other table but not us even though we did tell them it was not the correct order. So we had to eat dishes we did not order, which was terrible service. Again, felt disrespected. We did not say anything because the experience was already not good so we didn't even try to talk to the waiters, obviously they had a lot of other tables and has other things to do, even though we would have appreciated 10 seconds of their time to apologize and just get us the correct dishes.
Food was okay but nothing special compared to other brunch/restaurants I go to that have that extra taste. Didn't find it there.
Altogether bad experience. It's the second time I come to that Brother Hubbard and I already did not enjoy the first time but wanted to give it another shot. Definitely will not be giving it a third. Hire more waiters when it's completely full so they have time to take care of each table, or do not open the whole place if you can't handle it. I felt terrible for them to see them confused and going to different tables with the wrong orders. It's not their fault at all, I wish their management could see how bad this is and find ways...
Read moreBeen meaning to come here since I moved to Dublin over a year ago!
The food didn’t disappoint! I was amazed at the size of the cafe, two floors and it was jam packed on a Sunday at 12:30, easily 500 people seated! They cater for large tables too which is a great option for birthday brunches or social occasions - great selection of brunch cocktails - Prosecco , Bellini’s etc.
I tried their homemade Ginger Beer, along with a side of chorizo (amazing), fried halloumi and potato bravas (the best!). For the actual dish we shared the corn bread tomato. To be honest it was a bit disappointing and I wouldn’t go for it again, but the other menu options look great for next time. The corn bread was a bit bland for my taste, and it just basically had a fried tomato, salted popcorn, and some mixed salad over it.
It is expensive enough, €12/13 for each breakfast dish but then again you are in the city centre!
The selection of pastries is second to none at the coffee counter when you enter the cafe. Although I was SO disappointed with the hot cross bun doughnut they had advertised on Instagram for Easter. It was supposed to be filled with orange custard but we got 2 and they were dry hard flavourless cake with no filled centre! :-(
The atmosphere is great, packed tables but still enough space between each. A great meeting spot. I’d like to try their South Dublin location which seems smaller and more intimate.
Overall I would say 8 or 9 out of 10. It seems to be more of an institution or the “hip” place on trend to be in Dublin right now! But the food is faultless, really different. Quite a limited simple menu though focusing on a middle eastern theme, heavy on corn bread eggs and vegan themes. Perhaps they could expand it a little to cater for other tastes - although who am I to say when they have crowds like those!
Would come back again with a large group. Definitely come once, for the experience more...
