We entered the hotel lobby at five of 5 pm and asked about dining. A pleasant young man called Angus assisted us with making a call to find that it wouldn’t be until half past 5 for our table and offered the bar as a comfortable waiting area.
At 5:30, we wandered to the restaurant. We were greeted kindly enough, our Covid-19 certificates were checked and we were seated in a completely empty restaurant. This set me off from the very start. The entire place remained empty through our entire meal save the last 10 minutes. What was the point of the wait? The hours are posted 7am until 10pm on Tuesdays. I expected to walk in and be seated in a completely full room.
We received a pitcher of water and our orders for meals were taken. We were later asked if we would like to see a drink menu. My husband said yes, we would. The waiter returned and asked only my husband if he wanted a drink. Halfway through the meal, I asked if it would be a bother to have a drink for myself and our daughter. These weren’t difficult drinks to prepare; a gin and tonic and a Bellini. As we were finishing our meal, we were advised the bar didn’t have an ingredient for the Bellini. We requested a cancellation of the two drinks.
My husband ordered the seafood chowder and likened it to canned soup. The beef he and our daughter ordered was over salted and the mash seemed to be from a package. They were also supposed to be garlic mash but it seems they just wave the garlic clove near the potatoes and call it good. I ordered the curry chicken. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t near a four star meal.
We went in believing this would be a highlight meal of our month long trip to Galway. Sadly, it has been the most disappointing. I give two stars because the staff were not unkind and the water was potable. I must say, I’ve paid more money in a lower rated eatery and had better service and flavor than I...
Read moreWhere to begin. We arrived at 5pm asking if they were available for seating. We secured a reservation for 5:30. We were shown our seats after waiting for a gratuitous amount of time. We then waited for 15 minutes for someone to take our order. One might think this was due to lack of staff. Not so. There were plenty of staff that seemed hardly to know what was even happening let alone to help us. Our order was taken but our drink order was not. When our waiter returned after a long while our drink orders were taken. My order of ginger ale came and was flat, barely half the glass filled and mostly ice. The rest of my families drinks never arrived. My seafood chowder came and the nicest thing I can say about it was that it was in a bowl. I had the braised beef. My daughter had that as well. My husband had the Thai coconut chicken with prawns. He had favorable things to say about his meal. I wish my daughter and l could say the same. Dinty Moore makes a better braised beef. My potatoes were far from garlic or sage flavored. The beef was overly salted and barely palatable. We ate it because we hadn’t eaten all day and we’re very hungry. I was also taught to not waste food. The service was friendly if uneven and inconsistent. The patrons of the hotel were rude, overly privileged and obnoxious. My husband was ready to leave before the water had even arrived. This was all shocking to us as we have had nothing but exemplary and wonderful service everywhere else we’ve been in Galway. I find it unfortunate this was not the case with The Gaslight Restaurant. My family’s love for Galway will not include this...
Read moreWe had 3 breakfasts and 1 dinner and all had the same issue that is the huge amounts of salt been used, I think this is due to the generally older clientele that dines here. In all cases what made it worst was the salt abundantly sprinkled on top of the food , example a large layer on top of the omelet vs in the egg mix
Most breakfast items are prepared ahead example scrambled eggs and then assembled, example the eggs scrambled way ahead and then wrapped in a tortilla
All the tortilla wrapper were soggy (even when asked to toast them on each side) again before someone just wrapped on the fly prepare cooked meals, see pic
There were some tentative to serve international food but I do not think the cook had a full knowledge, example ordered the "mezze" but come out in a shape of a salad and a small quantity of hummus was put on the side with no pita bread (and the listed ciabatta bread was never served even if listed on the menu)
Desserts served with soup side spoon and staff looked puzzled when asked for small spoon/fork
Fish and chip was good but side salad had no condiment at all
Fried goat cheese was in reality a Camembert cheese with a layer of goat cheese (no no for allergies)
And yes beer was good but restaurant should be really...
