An Púcán, Galway: A Diamond in the Rough Seeking Transformation
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
An Púcán in Galway, while possessing a certain charm, falls short in several aspects that, in today's competitive pub scene, could use some serious attention.
Firstly, the ambiance of this establishment is reminiscent of an outdated sports bar desperately in need of an upgrade. The use of projected televisions instead of combining TVs is a missed opportunity to modernize the space, especially when compared to more contemporary spots like Camden in Dublin. The large, unused wall at the back could be transformed into a captivating big screen, enhancing the overall experience.
The lighting situation is less than ideal, with broken and non-functioning lights on the roof creating a dim and uninspiring atmosphere. The smoking area, a grim old courtyard, could be revitalized to its full potential, especially considering the opportunity to host outdoor DJ events, Similar to the great Massimos.. (Instead of FPL meet ups.....), the boucers on the door certaintly have their work cut out to work nights like these, This lack of attention to detail is particularly disappointing, given the evident turnover from the frequent stag and hen parties.
Considering the significant turnover generated by stag and hen parties, there's no excuse for the lack of attention to detail. The establishment has been overdue for an upgrade since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and addressing these issues would undoubtedly enhance the overall customer experience.
On the beverage front, An Púcán disappoints with a lackluster pint of Guinness that seems to lack the craftsmanship found in other establishments around Eyre Square. A flat and dull pint that might just start a conversation on its own is not what patrons expect from a pub in such a vibrant city. An increased variety in beer tap selections could breathe new life into the drinks menu, providing patrons with more choices to complement their meals. (Asahi, San Miguel, Staropramen, Stella Artois, Amstel, Zinga Irish Ginger Beer Draught maybe.....)
In conclusion, An Púcán has the potential to shine with some overdue upgrades. The feedback provided is meant to be constructive, urging the establishment to step up its game in order to compete with the standards set by Dublin pubs. It's time for An Púcán to transform into a vibrant, contemporary hub that not only caters to the masses but also stands out in the competitive...
Read moreWorst experience I’ve ever had in a pub or restaurant!
Just had an extremely inappropriate experience in this pub. Two members of staff were moving a table and smacked the table into my chair, and instead of making a simple apology one of them shouted at me “Move your chair”. After this I spoke to the very nice waitress and asked to speak to the manager. Well it turned out one of the people who hit into me was the manager (and he was the one who shouted) so I had to make the complaint directly to the person I was complaining about. When I explained why I was unhappy with what had happened, he responded unbelievably aggressively, standing over me and shouting in my face. It really felt like he wanted to hit me. Then he slapped me on the back (again totally inappropriate) before walking off and I told him he had no reason to touch me (which anyone with any sense would have known).
Finally, and perhaps most amazingly, he returned with the other person he had been moving the table with, a security man, and they both started shouting in my face. The most unbelievably inappropriate situation I’ve ever had. Avoid this place until they get more professional staff.
If any higher manager/owner sees this review I’d like to talk about what happened. An Púcán is a well-known and respected establishment and deserves...
Read moreI was very disappointed that Boat is gone, one girl behind the Bar was very nice, friendly and helpful. Lad that was, I hope, still in training was pretty bad, had no clue, oblivious. We were told menu was changed day before so one on table was outdated, we blindly ordered fish and chips for 4, 3 small cokes one Heineken 0 and paid nearly 100 euro! Don't get me wrong food was absolutely delicious but for quick lets grab quick bite and go on our way it was really expensive and we had no clue what we are getting ourselves into. Bathroom was cute and clean. Very empty on Tuesday afternoon.

Thank you for taking the time to reply so thoughtfully. The food really was absolutely gorgeous — we were just taken by surprise on price as it was only a quick stop, but the quality was clear. I really appreciate you acknowledging the menu update and training points, and it’s great to know feedback is taken on board. We’ll happily give An Púcán another try next time...
