MCDonagh’s is a popular fish and chips restaurant in Galway. You walk in, order your fish of choice to be fried (Cod, Salmon, Whitting, etc.) at the counter and seat yourself. We were a family of four and knew what each person in our party wanted. We were next in line to order when our daughter sat at a table. She was scolded by the employee for sitting at a table before ordering. She explained and signaled (by pointing) that her family was currently ordering. The worker continued her condemnation until we arrived at the table. Our fish was fried well: super crispy! However, there was no use of seasoning. The fish was bland and inedible without the garlic sauce. The chips were the worst chips we had while in Ireland. They were soft, mushy and also without seasoning. The ambiance was festive, causal, and filled with Irish charm. Personally, we wouldn’t go back again and it’s hard to recommend.

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner at the restaurant. They offer seating for fish & chips only (left hand side, first come first serve, usually the shorter line up) and for the restaurant (right hand side after 5pm, more extensive menu). We waited about 40 minutes for a table around 7pm and there was still a line when we left around 9pm. Service is fast and the food is very good and less expensive than a couple other seafood restaurants we've tried on our Ireland trip. My boyfriend had their soup of the day and the shellfish platter, and I had their evening special (mussels as a starter, cod & chips for a main, glass of wine). The mussels were fairly small but they give you a lot; I would recommend getting them as a starter and not as your main dish. Definitely a place I'd recommend, even just for the fish & chips if you don't want to wait for a table

It was a bit confusing when we went it as it seemed like two restaurants in one so we didn’t know which one to go to. On one side there were lots of people and waiters were running around with fish and chips plates and on the other side not so many people, and having some sort of menu. We wanted fish and chips so we went to the immediate table as we went in. We soon found out that we will have to go and order ourselves, that’s no problem. I took the hake and my friend took the ray. Both were really delicious if we talk about the fish, but we had to take the batter away as it was extremely oily. The chips were tasty, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The prices are overall okay but I would have wanted the fish to be less greasy. Maybe next time will try the other part of the restaurant as when leaving I found out it’s the same but better.

Very good seafood restaurant at reasonable prices. As someone from the middle of the US, I am not very familiar with any kind of seafood, particularly oysters. In fact, they have always seemed disgusting to me. However, these large Galway oysters (which I tried because they are, after all, a local delicacy) were not fishy and were easy to eat. These are probably the first oysters I have been happy to continue eating. The onion rings were also quite good. They were cooked perfectly, though I wish they had a bit more salt or something as they seemed a bit plain. Overall, I would definitely take future visitors to Galway here!

They open at 12noon and the line gets busy as soon as they open. Pretty simple way to order food. Pick the fish, fries and drinks or oyster if you want. Please order first before looking for a seat or table, that’s how they do it here. I saw a staff stopping a woman going to a table and told her to order first before going to a table. For the food gosh is freshly cooked! Cod fish is good and also the mackerel. Get the garlic sauce too! I read a review that the fish isn’t tasty but I guess it’s the classic way to make fish and chips! We liked it. Tourists flock to this place too.

Some of the best fish and chips I had in Ireland or Scotland during my vacation! The food came out quickly and was fresh and tasty. The person who took our order was also great. I mentioned my husband didn't like fish and she suggested he should try it with curry. My husband said he was fine without the curry but after we sat down she brought us over a small side of curry for free which she didn't have to do! She was right the fish was great with the curry, my husband really enjoyed the fish with the curry too! Can't recommend this place enough for fish and chips
