Now I'm a man who knows his kebabs right. I've been around the world and I've tried a lot of local turkish kebab in a lot of countries and cities(Warsaw best btw). Wexford Kebab House claims to be an authentic kebabarie but do I think it'll survive the current post-tarriff economic climate? Who am I to say. What I can speak on is my opinion and my experience of Wexford's newest spot.
Walking into the spot is does feel somewhat sparse and barren. No music, minimal decorations(balloons to mark the grand opening), no smells and no noise. Now I won't decide to knock off points for the the weirdly liminal vibes, as they have, at the time of writing this review, have been open for almost 2 days so I won't comment too much on the lack of character in the shop as that takes time, and it was 1pm, of course its quiet. There are plenty of booths, and its clean, what more do you really need.
As I walked in, I got the chance to talk to the staff. The owner talked me through the menu, noticing falafels, plates, etc. I won't pretend like I was really looking at the entire menu, because I knew what I was there for. Its called Wexford Kebab House. So I ordered a lamb & doner wrap, but there were chicken, and mixed meat options and probably more. What truly drew me to the kebab experience was the rotating greasy Goddess in the back, known as the shish kebab. It was gorgeous and juicy, with plenty of meat spinning around the rack. It looked tantalising and it took a feat of strength to not jump over dramatically and rob the whole thing but I digress.
So after paying and waiting about 10 minutes for my kebab, and watching a few others pop in and out and order, eventually I would be delivered my food. I was offered napkins, cutlery and sauce, so fair play to the lady, thank you.
Now the part of the review we've all been in anticipation for. The main event, and what we're really here to talk about. The kebab. To remind you, reader, I ordered a lamb & doner kebab, and included in the price are chips(the frozen standard french fries from Lidl). Regarding the chips, nothing of note, it was cooked and hot, can't complain. Now the kebab itself, I'm divided over. While it has its pros, it also has some cons. To sing its praises, it was a pretty tasty kebab. The naan and its contents were incredibly fresh and warm, the sauce dripped out the bottom, the meat was just as delicious in the naan as it looked on the shish. Every bite was full of flavour, none of which overpowered each other, working together in harmony, to provide a tasty experience. Nothing chewy, nothing out of place, and with good ratio of meat and veg. I will say the kebab might've benefitted from more sauce, as it wasn't as rich as I would expect, but I know some people like their kebab to taste like kebab and not all garlic sauce like some other establishments in Wexford. A genuine con I experienced is just the lack of food. For the price I paid(coming soon) the amount of packing within the kebab and the amount of chips was somewhat disappointing. I understand I'm not the average clientele, with similar proportions to Trump, being 100kg and 6" 4' myself, but my belly was still expecting more, which I simply didn't get, which did annoy me. However, getting aside that it was delicious, and something genuinely gourmet and authentic, and not just pure grease on an insane level, with me experiencing a somewhat rare occurrence of not feeling like I could get food poisoning. So good on them for delivering one of the best kebabs in Wexford
However, as I've hinted at, it does come at a cost. I paid €13.90. This is a staggering cost I feel, for what you get. I don't know the cost of running a business, but at €14 for just a doner and chips, I believe its somewhat hefty. But that's my opinion, its the market and the people of Wexford that'll truly decide whether it'll last. It certainly fills a gap in the market of a kebab that won't make you beg for God's mercy while naked and clutching your stomach over a toilet the next...
Read moreI had to delete my previously very positive review i made 3 months ago due to my experience yesterday on my return to Wexford kebab house.
The first time i went they were using real lamb kebab meat that was clear of any other kebab shop in town. Yesterday when i went I was shocked to see that they had switched to the processed lump of meat that all kebab shops use (see picture). An extra complaint is that i had ordered a mixed kebab and the amount of chicken i got was less than 5% i would guess. It's clearly all because they save so much money selling this processed lamb kebab.
I wouldn't say that the taste was that bad, but this place is almost 5€ more expensive than most kebabs in Wexford, this was totally acceptable when they had the high quality meat, but now it's a joke. I really had respect for this place when it first opened, when they served the real meat, but i have to say that now I'll never be going back here until they change...
Read moreI ordered lamb and beef kebab on plate with rice and garlic and chilli sauce. Garlic sauce was best part of the whole kebab. Chilli sauce wasn’t spicy at all. Whole portion was big. If you want quantity over quality that’s the place to go. Rice took about 60% of the plate, salads which was tasty took about 20% of the plate and mix lamb and beef meet also around 20% of the plate. In my opinion there should be much more meet on the plate. The meet is the base of kebab dish. I thought it would be much better. The worst for me is that they don’t give the receipt, I only got card...
