Adding to my previous review, as Alghero was our first stop in our multi week trip in Sardinia and Sicily. Trattoria Caragol was the unanimous choice of our family as the best restaurant of our 2 month trip. We have ended our vacation in Carloforte, and we almost are considering a return to Alghero just to to have another meal at this restaurant!!
(Original review) Very welcoming and attentive service. The pasta dishes were phenomenal; it is homemade so there were only 2 types of pasta that night and 5 pasta dishes/sauces (my son wanted the tomato and pork sausage sauce but didn’t want the gnocchi that accompanied it, but it was no problem to substitute the gnocchi with the tagliatelle). The simple menu description (at least the English translation) does not convey the incredible dish you will receive - eg “pasta with vegetables “ turned out to be an amazing and subtle flavor of the sauce made with vegetables. Interesting combinations that worked very well - eg gnocchi with tomato sauce, mint and cheese - simple but perfectly executed. We ordered the house red, which was very good and a great value. Mostly Italian speaking diners so even though it is in the historic center there seemed to be few tourists (we were one of 2- 3 tables of foreign tourists). Cozy, warm atmosphere of lighting and gorgeous curved brick archway/ ceiling. We would have gone back the following night if we had not left Alghero...
Read moreHugely overrated place. Can't understand all the good reviews. We came in during a relatively quiet time, got a table next to the kitchen which was not that bad. The waiter came 3 times to ask if I have chosen something and I was clearly going through the menu and deciding. In the end we took the sea fantasia plate as a starter since we wanted to taste all the good stuff, pasta for main and house red wine. The seafood was a rip-off. One piece of calamari, little bit octopus salad, onion, bit of warm fish tasteless, onions an tomatoes. Didn't taste great. House wine was way too warm, even for a red. But ok it was a warm day and it was kept in the room. Pasta tasted just weird. I had malleredus, my wife had some sort of dumplings. I can't put a finger on it but it had a strange aftertaste and that was just pata, tomato sauce and pieces of sausage. To top this, in Italian restaurant I wouldn't expect that the cheese for your pasta comes in a small piece of plastic. We were very disappointed, didn't finish the food or wine. There are much better places around in my opinion. But then again 100 people,...
Read moreFirst of all I just want to say the interior of the restaurant was perfect, the old towns( in Sardinia) walls were built into the restaurant and had lots of historical cultural things, the had staff that were fluent in German and English and were fast and nice, the food was to die for to start me and my family shared the seafood in plater which had 5 beautiful starters then for my main course I had the most amazing fish I have ever tasted, the swordfish with a side of potatoes which were melt in ur mouth pices of potatoes and I was so full I couldn’t eat a dessert but the desserts looked just as good as the food I ate, the staff were perfect they made a slit mistake on the receipt and we said and they didn’t even agrue it look at it they said no problem and left it at that which showed that they were lovely people. Highly recommend thank very much Trattoria Carragol the...
