Beware! Scammy and Deceptive Practices at Da Gemma in Amalfi
My recent experience at Da Gemma in Amalfi left a bitter taste in my mouth, and I feel compelled to share my disappointing encounter to warn other potential customers.
First and foremost, be cautious of the hidden charges at this restaurant. When we received the bill, we were shocked to discover an 8 euro cover charge added to each person's bill. What was even more infuriating is that no mention of this cover charge was made throughout our dining experience. When we confronted the staff about it, they simply brushed it off, claiming that "every restaurant in Italy charges this," which was an outright lie. Many other reputable restaurants we visited during our trip in Italy did not impose such a fee.
Furthermore, Da Gemma touted itself as a premium dining establishment, but the food failed to live up to the hype. To our dismay, it was the most expensive meal we had in Amalfi, yet the quality was far from satisfactory.
The most egregious part of our ordeal was the fish dish. On the menu, it was listed at 10 euros, which seemed reasonable. However, when we received the bill, they had charged us a whopping 60 euros for the fish without any prior indication that they charge by the gram. Nowhere did they mention the weight or how they calculate the final cost. This deceptive practice is nothing short of unethical and felt like a blatant attempt to exploit unsuspecting tourists.
In conclusion, Da Gemma in Amalfi is a restaurant to...
Read moreDO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Probably the worst experience i’ve had in a restaurant in my life. First of all, the booking experience was very strange and rude, the website works very badly and when calling the restaurant, we were rudely told to book through the website. Anyway, we still managed to book a table. We really wanted to try the restaurant since the menu seemed very interesting and the reviews were mostly postive.
At the restaurant, it took a very long time before anyone came to our table and when someone finally showed up, he simply looked at us and waited for us to tell him what we wanted to order, he left without a smile or a word. When the food came, everything was quite bland, unsurprising and cold, very boring actually. We both ordered the beef filet as main course and it was completely ridiculous, it looked like a mcdonald burger patty with some mashed potatoes, horrible. Also, throughout all our dinner, every person working there seemed to dislike their job and their life, they all looked at us in a very miserable and despicable way.
Anyway, I’ve had some incredibly better italian food in my hometown in Canada and this was by far one of the strangest experience of my life especially...
Read moreI could not eat here. I made a reservation online this Morning at Da Gemma for 7:30pm. I came here with my late husband in 2007 so I wanted to remember that special time. ( he died in 2015) I am traveling alone this time. Upon arrival they asked if I had a reservation, they said no, I said I made it online this morning. They found my reservation but I didn’t say how many ppl. For one person there was only indoor seating they said. But there were many other tables outside and dinner at 7:30 is not the peak time. They said I made it this morning and that was too late. They should block online reservations if it’s such a problem. Then they asked for my green pass, I said I was vaccinated. They then brought a hostess to seat me next to the entrance inside where the waiters hang out. Worst table. They made me feel unwanted, unwelcome and uncomfortable because I was just one person. So I proceeded to go next door where the waiter remembered me and brought me to a great table. Da Gemma needs to be more accommodating and not so rude to solo travelers. I hope they get lots of business. They are no Don Alfonsos but just a...
