I visited Royal Gelato three times in one day while exploring Amalfi. While the products themselves were generally good, the service was inconsistent and ultimately left a negative impression. The first visit was lovely—I had a lemon sorbet served in a lemon with a decorative twig, and I enjoyed it seated inside the shop. It was fresh, well-presented, and memorable. Unfortunately, my experience with one staff member—an older woman with dyed blonde hair and noticeable dark roots—made my next two visits disappointing. On the second visit, I ordered Oreo and tiramisu gelato to go. I briefly misspoke and said cappuccino instead of Oreo but corrected myself immediately. Despite the clarification, she served me tiramisu and cappuccino. The gelato was good, but not what I asked for, and the portions were noticeably smaller than those served by other staff. Later that same day, I returned for a limoncello spritz and sat outside. The drink was fantastic, and the young male waiter was friendly and professional. However, when I walked inside to use the restroom, the same older woman from earlier stopped me and asked, in a rude tone, if I was a paying customer. I said I was, and I believe my waiter vouched for me (they exchanged words in Italian). She then let me pass—no apology, just a dismissive “ah ok.” Royal has potential thanks to its quality offerings, but service can significantly affect the experience. I’d recommend avoiding the older waitress with dyed blonde hair and dark roots, as her attitude and stinginess overshadow an otherwise charming spot.

We stopped by this place to try their famous lemon gelato — the one served inside a real lemon, priced at €12. Visually? Beautiful. But the overall experience? Surprisingly bitter. I came with my mother and we simply wanted to share one. The portion is more than enough for two — unless You’re trying to develop diabetes on the spot. But we were told sharing is not allowed: “One order per person or no table.” So I had to stand while my mother sat and ate. Ridiculous. What’s even funnier? Just the day before, we had a better-tasting, larger, and far more affordable lemon gelato in Capri — €7, no drama, just good vibes. This place looks good, but when it comes to hospitality and common sense — sadly, it’s lacking. Amalfi deserves better.

I've been in Italy for 6 weeks and this is the best gelato ever. AND you get to sit at the table for free and watch the crowd go by. I got the latte gelato because my experience has been that coffee ice cream is more like espresso--way too strong. For 3euro I got a piccolo in a cup and they actually mounded it up some, unlike about every other tourist area gelateria. (I usually tell those people "de piu", more, and look at them like they tried to cheat me.) Every other place in Amalfi wanted 5euro and honestly, I never paid more than 3euro for gelato even in ROME! and I wasn't going to start now. I can't even imagine what people are paying for those huge ice cream cones.

Terrible experience – not recommended

This place is just Instagrammable, nothing more. They should choose their staff more carefully.

My friends and I stopped at this spot during a long and hot trip, drawn in by the idea of having a sorbet or gelato. We sat down at a table waiting to order, while one of our friends went to the bathroom. While we waited, one of my friends ate a small piece of savory food she had in her bag (since they only serve lemon sorbets and gelato, and she needed something salty).

Then the waiter arrived and, instead of politely asking us not to eat outside food, he rudely confronted us, saying it was “unacceptable” because it “ruins the image of the place.” We could have understood the request, but the tone and attitude were completely inappropriate.

After this unpleasant first interaction, the waiter came back and asked, in a very rude tone, “So what’s your intention? Are you leaving or ordering?” — even though it was obvious we were just waiting for our friend to come back from the bathroom. When we decided to leave to avoid further unpleasantness, he made things worse by saying, “Your friend has to pay as well for using the bathroom,” even though we hadn’t ordered anything at all — again, with a disrespectful tone.

Such arrogant and rude behavior completely ruined the experience. We felt disrespected and unwelcome. I absolutely do not recommend this place, especially if you expect even the minimum amount of kindness...

The most incompetent and unfriendly ice cream shop and owner ever.

Questions about the ingredients were not taken seriously, nor answered properly. I went there the first time this afternoon and I was convinced everything was ok. When I went back later this evening, I learned that there were other ingredients in the ice cream that I wasn’t made aware of before.

So, if you have any allergies or follow a (special) diet/lifestyle (like veganism) - do NOT go here. (!!!)

The owner and also his staff are not able to communicate with you, so it made it incredibly difficult when I tried to explain how important it is to let your customers know what ingredients are(n’t) in the ice cream they sell. The staff did try to explain it to me, however it seemed as if they weren’t informed on what exactly it is that they are selling. They called the owner, who was more than unfriendly. He did not seem to care about the questions I asked. At one point, I tried to explain to him how dangerous it can be if someone who has an allergy consumes something which can cause an allergic reaction. But he really did not care about anything I was trying to say. He kept interrupting me and trying to shut me up.

Personally, I think it is important to know what you sell. To me this was a matter of personal importance, but for some who are extremely allergic, this could be very dangerous.

Besides all this, €4 for a small cup is pretty...
