Ristorante la Tana — Restaurant in Bergamo

I went on recommendation of my airbnb host, couldn't get in the first night (went to excellent Dispensario in the bell Tower square instead) so I booked the following night. I was so looking forward to it, based on all the reviews, but I was very disappointed. Service bland, ranging from cold to non-existent. The waitress had no idea what's in the dishes. The starter of Sicilian prawn "salad" was weirdly presented, with soggy zuccini flower and school canteen piece of pepper w melted cheese on it (?!). 3 little tapas dishes with nothing in common, and impossible to eat easily, not to mention bland. The beef cheek in red wine, rich, thick, as it should be, but overspiced with cinnamon and cardamom or cloves or all of the above, it was so so bitter, absolutely overpowering the fabulous meat cut and killing any of its delicate flavour. My mouth was burning from the spice bitterness for an hour after, and I love spices especially Middle East and North Africa, but this was something else! It was completely uninspiringly served with totally unseasoned, bland squashed polenta, nothing else. Definitely won't be back, considering so many good options in Bergamo, including in spectacular piazza Vecchia. This is expensive, and has neither the view of L'Alimentari nor the food of Dispensario to...

First things first: the food is great (hence two stars). But everything else was actually quite… let‘s say 'interesting‘. We (2) booked in advance and got the worst table exposed in the middle of the location and right next to the condiments and the toilet. The service is a non-service: Bottle of water is placed with the glasses on the table without being opened and poured. The glasses of wine don‘t get refilled. The plates get exchanged without any question how we liked it. The door to the toilet, left repeatedly open by guests, stays open, unless you close it yourself. Vinegar, oil and pepper are reached to the salad, for the salt we had to help ourselves. With the coffee at the end came some confections… and an infestation of ants. We showed the service lady the busy insects, the confections got taken away without a single word of apology or replacement. Of course we were charged for it. A good lesson of how...

I am very sorry to be writing this review.

A pity because the food was great and both myself and my fiancé had a great time dining in this restaurant -- only for me to develop a severe case of FOOD POISONING shortly (2hrs) later after leaving the restaurant. almost ending up in the emergency room due to intoxication. The biggest likelihood being my snails pasta dish- the snails were note purged well enough before cooking.

Following this we made the restaurant owner aware. Despite all this and pharmaceutical advice pointing towards food poisoning not even a reasonable compensation for part of the bill was made by the owner.
