Came here yesterday, with the certitude to have a delighful experience, according to the look of the products, and the comments. Took a bresaola with salad foccaccia (foccacia farcita), the customer before me made a mistake in his order, or wanted to change it, therefore the order of the plates were a bit of a mess before going to the oven. The old lady that manages the oven was sure mine foccaccia was a different type (because of the changing of the order, that was not my responsability neither my move), on the other hand I was sure of my actual order, which I made 2 minutes ago ! Then her colleague came and explained to her what happened, and that I was right. But the old lady were upset because she was sure to be right... So she had to leave few minutes, not before being sure to put my foccaccia in the oven for triple the ordinary time (the one I saw for all the other customers before me)... therefore she had what she wanted, and my foccaccia was as dry and burnt as she struggled to cut it with her scissors... thank you for my only day and chance to enjoy a nice break lunch in beautiful Citta alta (in addition I saw afterwards while checking the ticket that I was overcharged, the price mentioned was 'pizza 15 euros / kgs', when the focaccia price is 11 euros / kgs... yes even tourists have brain, eyes and ears to see you scam them or want to take advantage of them... of course, it's a behaviour these people love when they see themself traveling abroad. At least, they can complain or shout in Italian, which is always...
Read moreThe Il Fornaio in Bergamo delivers an Italian culinary rhapsody, particularly with its focaccia - an exemplar of the baker’s craft. These breads are not merely stuffed; they are meticulously curated parcels of flavor, each layer singing in harmonious decadence.
Getting there is part of the charm. The ascent via the funicular, or "shimeo", offers a juxtaposition of the quaint old world against the panoramic backdrop of Bergamo Alta's grandeur. Once at the summit, Il Fornaio is a delightful jaunt through the cobbled arteries of the old city.
This establishment, while ideal for a swift bite, entices one to ascend to the upper echelon of its dining area. Here, one can partake in the almost ceremonial indulgence of a richly laden focaccia whilst imbibing in the local libations. The second storey offers not just sustenance, but a window to the theatre of the streets - a tableau vivant of the Bergamasque hustle.
In essence, Il Fornaio is a paradox, proffering quick meals that, by all means, should encourage a lingering. If one does venture there, be it for the effervescent atmosphere or a peckish interlude, ensure to climb its stairway - for it’s there that one can truly savour both the sustenance and...
Read moreNot a great experience. Went there on a stop between Lake Como and Lake Garda after having seen it promoted on socials. Service was very poor. It was only 11am and the young girl that served me was very disinterested. I asked if they had the mortadella with burrata today as there was a lot of empty space at the servery and not much to choose from. She told me no, so I ordered 3 other pieces of pizza and paid the 25 euro charge. We had a ham and artichoke, cheese and sausage, and burrata and truffle slice. The only good one was the burrata and truffle, the others were pretty basic and nothing special. As we started eating, about 5 new pizzas were brought out and put in the servery window - including the burrata and mortadella I had wanted and asked about. Had the server bothered to tell me it was coming out in about 5 minutes, I would have happily waited. It’s pretty clear the staff don’t understand that hospitality is a business where you should try to be hospitable, friendly and welcoming. I wouldn’t return based on...
