El Merendero Snack Bar — Restaurant in Capri

Although the start of our trip started off very nicely, it’s sadly ended badly when we turned up at this place. It started off with ordering chips, which ended up being salt with a side of chips.

My partner ordered a lemon slushy with mint, but as they ran out of mint we got offered mint syrup. The drink was disgusting and tasted like mouthwash..we kindly asked if we could change it or if it could come off the bill. The “manager” came (woman with dark hair and a mole on her face) and said she can’t do anything about it. After asking multiple times, she said she would give us a change in the drink but we had to leave the table and kicked us out the restaurant. We asked if she was serious, and she said she was. She brought the card machine and insisted we pay, without even seeing the bill. We insisted on seeing the bill as we didn’t trust her, in which she proceeded to clearly swear at us in Italian. It’s unfortunate to have such an experience in a tourist destination as iconic as Capri. The establishment we visited seems to prioritize short-term profits over service quality. We observed practices—likely driven by the staff or management—aimed at misleading tourists to increase daily income. This kind of approach will ultimately harm both the business itself and Capri’s overall tourism image in the long run.

We paid €25 for a simple sandwich, a beer, and a bottle of water. Although we shared only one sandwich between two people, we were still charged an extra service fee as if two full meals had been served. Beyond the questionable pricing, the staff’s attitude was equally disappointing. Unfortunately, this seems to be a recurring issue, as many other negative reviews reflect similar complaints about misleading and unfair practices. This is a horrible place. Overpriced and very bad quality. We were a large group and ordered many drinks and kept ordering and they made an issue for one person not ordering a second drink. Stay away from this bad place. Each person got two or more drinks and they created an issue. Mind you we were still drinking and order full drinks when she started this issue. And also the place had four other available places.
