Make no mistake: This is one of the most traditional, real, and delicious cafes in Florence. I read some one-star reviews here and laughed out loud because they show how some people expect a foreign culture to comply with their own culture or else, it’s terrible. At Scudiere, you can have quick and easy service at the counter: pay for what you want at the register, bring your ticket to the counter, and order. If there’s any indoor table vacant, you can bring your coffee and food and sit down for no extra charge, just like at your favorite Starbucks. Except that the coffee will taste great and its temperature will make it ready to drink immediately. (That’s coffee in Italy for you and there’s no better in the world.) If you want to sit outside, expect to pay full service prices - that’s just the way it is everywhere in Italy (and in most of Europe).
The service does not prioritize Italian-looking people as one review says: naturally, they work at highest efficiency with people who speak Italian, but they are kind and accommodating to everyone. I was just there with a group of 20 students during breakfast rush and they made every effort to serve us well, quickly, and with smiles all around.
I have been going to Florence for more than 23 years and I’m happy that although so many traditional places have closed down or lost their character, Scudiere continues to be the real...
Read moreThe negative reviews here are really a bit harsh 😅 yes, this bakery has its own system, which they had to explain to me at first, but I didn't have to make the negative experience that they didn't take me seriously or that I was made to wait completely . In retrospect, I think the system is really great, I always wanted to take my mini brioche with me and was able to pay quickly and go on, even with long queues. Sometimes you have to be patient.
However, I can agree that the prices for sitting and drinking on the spot are hard to believe.. 1.50 for a cappuccino to go, but 5 EURO to drink on the spot? :O Unfortunately, when I drank my cappuccino, I had to realize that it wasn't gourmet coffee either and that it tasted very burnt and weird, which you don't actually expect from such a nice and expensive place. I hope that the management of the café will work on the baristas and their further training. I rather recommend the specialty coffee cafés, of which there are some in the city center and don't rip you off that much.
Otherwise, the brioche there were the tastiest I've eaten in my week...
Read moreAVOID!! This place is a tourist trap as it is located right opposite the Santa Maria Duomo. I am writing this as I sit here as the service has been appalling! We came here to have some drinks followed by dinner and so when we were halfway through our first drink, we caught the attention of our waiter to ask if we can order some food. Our waiter assumed we asked for the bill and got so annoyed at us for correcting him. We then wanted to order our second drink whilst we were waiting for our food and the waiter once again assumed that we were asking when our food would be ready and said “25 mins wait” and just walked off. We managed to order our drinks from another waiter and when they came, my wine glass had a lipstick stain on there - absolutely gross. Unfortunately I didn’t call the waiter to complain about this as once again he would have assumed something else or gotten annoyed at us. In terms of the food, we ordered the Margarita Pizza and it was the most unauthentic Italian pizza - seemed like a frozen Costco style pizza. Save your money and eat...
