Pretty Cafes in Florence - Episode 2! ☕️ . @caffegilli , which opened in 1773 is the oldest coffee shop in Florence. They serve delicious coffee and pastries, and have a full service food menu as well. The location in the Piazza della Republica is amazing - you can choose to sit outside to people watch, or travel back in time a few centuries and sit indoors. It is evokes such an old world feeling! Everything is so beautiful- right from the menus, to the coffee and desserts. Tip : Their freshly squeezed orange juice is delightful - highly recommend getting a glass with your coffee! . . . . . . . #theprettycities #coffeeshopcorners #coffeeeee #eeeeeats #dametravelerfoodie #bestambiance #bestambience #prettylittletrips #beautifuldestinations #theshopkeepers #storefrontcollective #bitsofbuildings

Caffè Gilli is a historic café located in the heart of Florence, Italy, known for its elegant interiors, rich history, and traditional Italian charm. Here's a review based on the general experience: Atmosphere**: The ambiance of Caffè Gilli is a perfect blend of old-world luxury and contemporary sophistication. With its chandeliers, mirrors, and marble accents, the café has a timeless elegance that transports visitors back to early 20th-century Florence. It's a great spot for people-watching, as it’s located in Piazza della Repubblica, a bustling area with plenty of foot traffic. Food & Drinks**: The café is known for its wide selection of pastries, chocolates, and traditional Italian desserts. The coffee is of exceptional quality, as you'd expect from an Italian café of this stature, and their cappuccinos and espressos are especially popular. The pastries are fresh, beautifully presented, and delicious, making it a perfect spot for a mid-morning or afternoon treat. Their menu also offers light lunches, such as sandwiches and salads, along with a selection of wines and cocktails. Service**: Service at Caffè Gilli is professional and courteous, though it can sometimes feel a bit formal. Given its prime location and historic reputation, the café tends to attract tourists, which means it can get crowded, and the service can sometimes be a bit slow during peak times. However, the staff are knowledgeable about the menu and provide recommendations when asked. **Price**: As expected for a café with such a prime location and history, prices are on the higher side. You’re paying for both the food and the experience, but many visitors feel that the ambiance and quality make it worthwhile. **Overall**: Caffè Gilli is a must-visit for those looking to indulge in a classic Italian café experience while enjoying the beauty of Florence. It’s perfect for a special treat, whether you're savoring a pastry with coffee or enjoying a glass of wine while taking in the view of Piazza della Repubblica. It may be a bit pricey, but the experience is memorable.

Stepping into Caffè Gilli feels like stepping into a world of timeless elegance and unparalleled culinary delight. My recent visit was an experience worth savoring, thanks to the exceptional service provided by Tomas and the exquisite pastries that accompanied the most amazing cappuccino I have ever tasted. From the moment I entered, Tomas greeted me with a warm smile and a level of attentiveness that instantly made me feel welcomed and valued. His genuine passion for coffee and dedication to excellent service shone through in every interaction. Tomas's recommendations were spot-on, guiding me through the menu with expertise and a personal touch that elevated the entire experience. The cappuccino at Caffè Gilli is nothing short of a masterpiece. Perfectly balanced with a rich, velvety foam, it was the ideal complement to the array of delectable pastries on offer. Each pastry was a work of art, showcasing the finest ingredients and meticulous craftsmanship. The flavors were sublime, with each bite delivering a taste of Florence’s rich culinary heritage. Caffè Gilli seamlessly blends historic charm with modern sophistication. Nestled in the heart of Piazza della Repubblica, its stunning interior and elegant ambiance create a perfect setting for both leisurely mornings and sophisticated afternoons. The cafe’s commitment to quality and tradition is evident in every detail, making it a standout destination in Florence. Caffè Gilli is more than just a café; it is a testament to the art of fine living. With its impeccable service, exquisite offerings, and inspiring ambiance, it stands as a beacon of Italian elegance and hospitality. Don’t miss the chance to experience the best of Florence at Caffè Gilli.

Lovely place! Gorgeous woodwork with beautiful artwork inside, great bar. Coffee barmen are always dressed in suits which elevates the atmosphere. It feels like you are eating inside a museum or a very expensive NY restaurant. Prices for drinks at the bar, coffee, cappuccino and pastries are reasonable. We did ‘di mangiare in piedi’ every time (drink/eat on foot by the bar) like majority of locals do for their morning coffees. You can either pick your pastries/sandwiches at the counter (but not drinks) and then pay for everything at cassa including drinks, or better, - pay for everything first and then show a receipt to barmen who prepare your drinks and the pastry counter. That way you reserve your spot at the bar that can get busy in the morning. You can also sit down outside or inside the restaurant, they’ll give you their regular menu and you’ll be served. Even though we haven’t had a dinner there, it was my top pick for morning coffee, cappuccino, snacks, sandwiches, and pastries. We stopped at Gilli at least 3 times during our stay in Florence. Their duchesse were super fresh and pastries yummy. All the ladies who work there are very sweet, the men, on the other hand, were grumpy with a pinch of Italian haughtiness, but it didn’t take away from our experience, as we do know we are in Italy 😀

Looked great, reviews pretty good, was getting late so decided to relax and enjoy the atmosphere whilst having some food and drinks. However, it took them ages just to come and take a drinks order. I asked for my beer and a bottle of water straightaway whilst others had ordered cocktails. As we were all thirsty. Watched the waiter and others service and pondered around. Had to call him over and ask why a bottle of water would take so long. Sri KS cam almost 15 minutes after we ordered them, plus the 5-8 mins sitting waiting for them to take the order. A friend had ordered a virgin colada and it wasn't!!! He asked me to taste and I realised immediately this was with rum!! They initially kept saying it's not. I insisted on tasting and they then took it away... To them return apologies and replace it. Then the food all came out rushed. Food was good. Then he couldn't be any nicer. Then came the bill. I thought as a courtesy they would deduct the drinks. I almost had to argue and they reluctantly took off the Pina colada for 12 euros. (He did bring me a beer for free, but the way they pour them in small glasses wasn't even worth it). Anyway, maybe a bad day, but it wasn't even busy and you would think in a place like that they would be more attentive and communicate better.

A historic place that claims to have an unbroken 300 or so year history as a cafe. Great rest stop right on the Piazza de la Republica. Personable waiters who have a proud bearing but cognisant of the fact that they are there for customer service. There is a sizeable covered ’terrace‘ outside but on warmer days, the charming indoor space is just the ticket. This cafe is much older than the Antico Greco cafe in Rome. It is a proper traditional cafe with a proper old style cafe ambience — that is, it isn’t designed like a broom cupboard or hallway with questionable paintings lining the walls. What’s more, (and never imagined there would need to have a review about this, see my review for Antico Greco), the toilets are clean and there are toilet seats as is reasonably to be expected from ’fine’ establishments, or even just plain decent ones. (I just cannot!). The prices at Gilli are higher than other surrounding cafes offering similar specialty pastries but they are not ludicrous when compared to comparable historic tourist cafes in the world. Super for watching the other tourists enjoying fabulous, friendly Florence.
