The two different pizzas we ordered were soggy and the ham and toppings were literally floating in water. Almost no cheese, almost no sauce (and we know what Italian sauce should be like as we have been eating here in Florence for over a week on this trip and have had amazing pizza at several locations including up the street at Tramonto which was amazing ). These pizzas were also flavorless and honestly we just couldn’t and didn’t eat them. We tried but It wasn’t worth it. The pasta type ravioli with the Parmesan white sauce and truffle was just terrible and the sauce was grainy and gritty. If it was truffle in the sauce it was terrible truffle or just truffle oil that was probably not great quality. The Florentine steak was nothing to talk about and does not do the name any justice. We have had so so many great meals in Florence and Italy and this was definitely one we will remember for all the wrong reasons. And lastly Florence and most restaurants in Italy we have been to are know to have at least a decent house wine and many have a great one. This one was the worst WINE I have ever had in all the times I’ve been to Italy. It was like red wine with a splash of sprite. So if that’s your taste then have at it. We have been to Florence three different times over the years and this was the first time I can say we have had a truly bad meal. As for service it started off ok but when they picked up our plates with basically everything on them everything changed. We didn’t complain or ask for anything. When they saw our plates and asked we just showed them the ham floating in water on top of the pizza and the curdled white sauce and said it wasn’t very good. Maybe we should have said terrible because that would have been the truth however we really didn’t want to offend anyone. However, when the plates go back the way they did and no one drank any of the wine that should send a very clear message, even if they didn’t like the answer to the question they asked us. After our plates were whisked away a third individual came by and handed us our check in a less than friendly or even decent manner. There were no complaints or rudeness on our part. We ordered, did not like it, chose not to eat it and when asked we answered politely and less critical than we probably should have been, paid our bill and left to find gelato which quickly made us feel happy again. Maybe the four of us had four different things and we were unlucky to have had four bad meals at the same time, but that’s hard for anyone to believe if you know much about the food in Italy. On a positive note it’s in the beautiful Piazza santo spirito where there are several other great places to eat like Osteria Santo Spirito (excellent but get there early the line is long and no reservation but worth it 10x over), and Tramonto (about 4 doors down) is probably one of the best pizza places I’ve visited of around 30 in Italy. I seriously believe you will come back for more of Tramontos pizza. Margarita is amazing and Diavolo is everything a pepperoni pizza lover could want. I hope this restaurant reads this review and understands we are just trying to tell people what we tried to tell them. Or maybe like the guy who brought us the check, they really don’t care what the 4 of us think. We tried this place because we wanted to give a different place in this already great piazza of food a chance , but sometimes you just get a...
Read moreWe had a lovely lunch at Caffe Ricchi. It is worth walking to the other side of the Arno past the Pitti Palace where you can get away from the crowds and feel a part of a local neighborhood. With the Basilica di Santo Spirto (which includes a lost Crucifix of an early Michelangelo and a quiet oasis in the outside courtyard and garden) as a backdrop and a lively market in the square, you have a perfect backdrop to enjoy a pleasant meal. The food was very good and very reasonably priced. We had a full lunch because we were skipping dinner so that factored into the price. Two glasses of white wine, two starters, two pasta dishes, a very good Chianti Classico and a dessert was 70 euros. Would be easily twice that in any major American city. The tagliatelle al ragu Bolognese was excellent and only 8 euros for a very large serving. We noticed Italian families enjoying this dish, with one table uniformly ordering it. The Caprese was also very good, very fresh, and plentiful enough to share. The tiramisu was light, smooth, creamy and delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. It was a very pleasant respite from the crowds and the mediocre food around many of the tourist sites. Thoroughly enjoyed...
Read moreAbsolute worst experience I've ever had at a cafe. The hygiene at the bar is visibly poor and when I went to the toilets it was very dirty (toilets and floor) and no toilet paper. I went to ask the waiter for toilet paper. I first asked in english since this place is located in a touristic part and full of americans, but he did not understand, which is ok, so I tried my best in italian, making the mistake of using one word in spanish instead of italian. This waiter then proceeds to complain in italian that he does not speak spanish. He then ignores me and continues all his other tasks. This time I try again to ask in italian with all the correct words and he yells to me that now he understands and that I shouldn't speak spanish to him and that he is busy with clients (I'm a client there too). He gives one paper tissue. Very unnacceptable since the wc is disgusting and what am I going to do with this one piece of paper. This time I say in english - no, just give me toilet paper please -, and now suddenly everybody understands english and takes them 5 seconds to finally get it. Also don't assume just because someone is not speaking italian well that they cannot understand what you are saying about...
