Any guesses on what famous Italian palazzo inspires The Apthorp on the Upper West Side? It was the Palazzo Pitti. The UWS building was built in 1908 by the Astors and named Charles Ward Apthorpe who once lived nearby. Cyndi Lauper, Al Pacino, Roise O’Donnell and Nora Ephron, who even wrote about the Apthrop, all lived inside this 12-story limestone building. The architects looked to the Palazzo Pitti for some inspiration. It dates back to 1458 when it was home of Luca Pitti, a Florentine banker. In 1549, the Medici family bought and this became their main residence for the ruling families of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Napoleon used the Palazzo briefly when Italy was under his control. After Italy was unified in 1871, it was the home of King Victor Emmanuel II since Florence was the capital of Italy for a short time. The Palazzo was eventually donated to the public by King Victor Emmanuel III in 1919 and became a museum. …….. ……. …… ….. … .. #nychistory #nycrealestate #nycarchitecture #upperwestside #uws #nyc #newyork #didyouknow #discovernyc #iloveny #welovenyc #florence #firenze #italianhistory #palazzopitti #medicifamily #italytravel #italianarchitecture #italy #firenzeitalia
