I ordered Baccalà alla Pisana coi Porri for my last dinner before flying home from my holiday. The waiter first brought myself and my partner someone else's food - I was just about to ask if what they brought was what I ordered because it seemed very different, and my partner, trying to avoid difficulty from not knowing the cuisine, had started to eat theirs. The waiter came 20 minutes later having realised the mistake and removed it.
Some time later the correct dishes arrived for my partner and I. It was clear that my cod was not cooked because it didn't flake away and needed me to tear at it to break it into bits. I explained this to the waiter who removed it and I waited for them to cook the dish fresh. By the time the rest of our party had finished their meals my second try turned up. It was identical to the first, not properly cooked and unsafe to eat. At this point I gave up and we decided we would pay up and leave, but I said that I would not pay for the fish because it was dangerous to eat it. The waiter said they didn't have authority to let me not pay for the uneaten, unsafe fish and that she would get the chef. Someone who isn't the chef but a woman pictured on the restaurant website as perhaps the owner or otherwise an authority there came and started shouting at me that they were not going to pay for my food because if I don't pay, they have to under Italian law. I calmly explained that it is raw and unsafe to eat. They continued to shout and abuse me. Then they said they would call the police. I had no option by then but to calmly agree that they should call the police. I waited, but they didn't, as this was obviously a well-tested tactic by this restaurant to get tourists to be too afraid not to do what they are told. In the end my partner felt forced to pay the whole bill so that we could get our children away from this wholly unacceptable situation, having to witness a woman purportedly in charge of a restaurant shouting and threatening a customer who dared to state the facts.
By the way, Italian consumer law states that customers can refuse to pay for unsafe food and they should not threaten customers for doing so. They are obviously not allowed to threaten customers with the police for this and there's no law in Italy that customers have to pay even if the food is unsafe or not what was described. They only had to apologise for this experience and deduct the fish from the bill to avoid reviews like this (and this restaurant has many reviews like...
Read moreGood and good food, service was good. Very big portions, a three course can not handle a normal manic. Very much wines, local ones too. Read moreThe food I ordered, which by the way was only pasta and grilled pork, took well over an hour and a half to arrive. I could understand it somewhat , I was there on a busy night and the restaurant seemed severely understaffed. However what I cannot explain is why my starter, beef tartar, took over an hour also which, for those who don't know is made from raw, uncooked beef.
One not food-related thing I must mention is how many areas the staff cater to at once. There are 3 different sizable areas outside that the outside staff of 2-3 waitresses have to serve all at once, with seating also inside. This can definitely affect the speed of service especially on more busy nights. Avoid going here on weekends (or at all). There is not enough staff, not only waitresses but, based on the frequency of food being served, also chefs, to cater to such a large area.
The food itself was quite good, however not in the slightest justifying the long wait. I was very tempted to leave and go for a kebab which would have been equally as tasty as what I got here, and without half my night wasted in an uncomfortable chair gnawing on complimentary stale bread in a bag.
The staff did, however, understand how inconvenient and tedious the wait was and made me pay for only one of three glasses of wine, which is a small thing but comes off as a nice gesture of apology.
Would objectively advise against choosing dining here, especially if you have any sort of schedule to follow when going out.
Wine was good though, that...
