Il Vignola — Restaurant in Rome

This is probably one of the worst restaurants I’ve had the misfortune of being in. We couldn’t get a table anywhere else around and the hotel recommends this place. Once we sat down in took about 10 minutes before the grumpy waiter acknowledged us. We asked for our drinks (glass of rose and a beer) don’t sell rose (in Italy?). We also asked for water as my wife was very thirsty beer came after 5 mines, wine after 10 mins. After 25 mins water had still not arrived although we had asked several times, notably several tables of local who had arrived and ordered after us had been given their water with a smile and a laugh. Some friendly locals sitting next to us who had visited Scotland and raved about the hospitality were visibly embarrassed and went into the restaurant to find out what was going on - the water suddenly appeared but was thumped down on the table. Our food arrived after an hour! I had ordered spaghetti carbonara which arrived looking like a can only describe as Kraft Cheesy Pasta. Instead of spaghetti it was some type of congealed pasta tubes covered in melted processed cheese and two tiny bits of frazzled something which I presume was bacon. I asked the waiter who came over very aggressively and told him this was not carbonara; he shouted a few of his colleagues over and poked about with the dish with forks. He said “pasta, cheese, bacon what do you want?” and they all walked away sniggering and laughing. This establishment blatantly do not like tourists (or perhaps English speaking tourists) and I would not recommend it to anyone. Disgusting with arrogant, bad mannered...

They do not even deserve a single star, this place is an absolute joke! They serve stale bread in paper bags, unmarked, left on the table, like a pack of old leftovers, and they charge 3 euros for 2 slices. The food is deplorable, zero seasoning, no salt, no pepper, no parmesan, I ordered a risotto with porcini mushrooms, the rice was not cooked, the meal resembled a soup, rather than a risotto and I have never evee tried a risotto without parmesan cheese. This one did not have it. The apetiser cobsisted of cold and bland grilled vegerables, straight of of can beans and mushrooms, a SINGLE slice of ham and a small slice of cheese. My husband had pasta with mushrooms, the mushrooms were uncooked and the meal was bland. In the middle of us eating the waiter came and took our plates from under our noses, there was still food in the plates. We left the both meals half eaten because our order was pure garbage and they tried to charge us nearly 8 euros for "servizio". I protested with the manager who does not speak English, so he directed me to one of the waiters and I exolained that I was not going to pay servizio charges for someone to take our plates under our noses. This pizzeria is hands down the best I’ve ever been to! My friend and I were on vacation in Rome for a week, and we couldn’t resist coming back four times. The Alla Diavola pizza was out of this world, and the spicy olive oil they serve is a game-changer!

What really set the experience apart, though, was the exceptional service from Zied—he was so friendly and made us feel right at home.
