It was late, I got hungry, and I got a little desperate. I had only modest expectations, and it’s a fine little family restaurant, but the place struggled to do more than the basics. Oh dear, not a terrible restaurant, but, by far, the worst we eat at in Rome. The food was average at best and the wine poor. The fact that other local restaurants were booked all night and this was virtually empty should have told us all we needed to know.

Sono cresciuto con la cucina de IL CANTINONE a Testaccio: primi piatti, pizze e fritti serviti in un grande locale caciarone e simbolo di una verace romanità. Poi improvvisamente il locale chiuse. Anni dopo ho ritrovato con sorpresa la stessa proprietà a gestire questo piccola trattoria sempre a Testaccio. Per questo talvolta sono tornato con la speranza di trovare quel calore e quei sapori, ormai sempre più rari, nella ristorazione romana, constatando purtroppo che la gestione di un tempo è ormai un ricordo. Qualità della cucina in caduta libera e tempi di attesa troppo lunghi sono ormai una costante. E nelle feste comandate, quando l'afflusso è un pochino superiore alla norma, tutto peggiora, se possibile. Circostanza che si è riproposta questo Ferragosto, anche con un menù giustamente ristretto vista la giornata. La sequenza pane-acqua-primi-secondi- contorni-dessert e caffè si è "spalmata" dalle 13 alle 16: una vero calvario interminabile che però non sembra aver turbato più di tanto la proprietà che ormai vive stancamente alla giornata.
