Tucked away in a charming little Roman alley right off of Piazza Argentina, rather substantial public transportation hub, half way between Termini train station and St. Peter's Basilica.
Prices: good. Pastas are 10-12 euros, meat dishes are 18-25 euros. Portion: initially disappointingly small. The antipasti were small and unimpressive. The pasta plate looked like a half portion of other restaurants. Quality: great pasta. They really put a lot of effort into making the pasta. Having the ravioli I wanted to savor each one. There were many layers of flavor. While at other restaurants the house wine is more than adequate, this house white was very flat and not worth it. Appetizers were not special. Service: In Italy often times the service is quite sub-par to other countries. I found this restaurant to be very welcoming and warm. The staff appears to be a mom-and-pop setup. If you need something, don't be afraid to wave them down. Atmosphere: again, very charming. If the evening is nice, sit outside in their little semi-private alley. Or sit inside a wonderful example of an authentic neighborhood restaurant, which doesn't put on airs but just brings on the Italian kitchen. Note: they do try to speak English; if you are patient and speak clearly, I think you'll be understood. They do have...
Read moreThe absolute best of Rome! My wife and I were looking for a restaurant at the end of a long day of touring the city with our eight month old daughter. We stumbled upon La Vecchia Locanda after a quick search for restaurants on Google Maps.
From start to finish we were treated like we had been part of Roberta's family for ages (she is the proprietor). Our server, Fabio was exceptionally attentive and accommodating to our little girl, helping keep her entertained and content while we had the most amazing food of our weeklong trip here in Rome.
The ambiance was superb – we felt like we had been transported into another era – surrounded by old world trappings in an ancient wine sellar underground. Between the delicious food, exceptional wine, and amazingly warm service, this was far and away our favorite Roman culinary experience. Thank you, Roberta and Fabio and the brother in law whose name we didn't catch for making us feel like family. We can't wait to...
Read moreMy wife and I recently completed a 12 day trip through Italy (Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples, and Rome) eating at different restaurants every night and this restaurant was by far the best we had. The ambience was perfect as we sat outside on a quiet alley with Star Jasmine climbing adjacent buildings and candles lighting each table. The service was truly exceptional. When we arrived, there was no room for walk up customers but the server who met us took pity on us and set up an extra table just for us. He then went out of his way to make the experience unique by making personal recommendations, learning our names, and attending to all our needs. The food was fantastic—I highly recommend any of the pasta with truffle. We enjoyed the experience so much that we returned to the same restaurant for a second night (the only place where we did this) because we didn’t want to risk an inferior experience anywhere else. Cannot recommend this restaurant...
