A Wonderful Last Night in Rome at Trattoria Pizzeria Porta Maggiore
On our last night in Rome, we found ourselves at Trattoria Pizzeria Porta Maggiore, and it turned out to be the perfect way to end our trip. From the moment we stepped inside, we were welcomed warmly by the owner, who spoke to us entirely in Italian—an experience we really enjoyed! Though the conversation was in Italian, the menu had translated English, making it easy for us to pick what we wanted.
The restaurant itself is small and cozy, giving off an authentic, local vibe. We saw some Italian locals dining there, which made us feel like we made a great choice that wasn’t too touristy. The menu had just the right amount of options—plenty to choose from but not overwhelming.
We started with some delicious bread, which was perfect for my husband to mop up the sauce from his plate. I ordered the carbonara, and it was everything you’d want from this classic dish: creamy, rich, and super filling. My husband got the chicken with peppers and potatoes, which he thoroughly enjoyed as well.
Even though we were completely full, the owner kindly offered us desserts, and we couldn’t resist. I went with the Panna Cotta topped with chocolate sauce, and my husband opted for the tiramisu. Both were fantastic, but the Panna Cotta was outstanding—like eating a bowl of light, fluffy whipped cream with just the right amount of chocolate topping. They also had a choice of berry sauce if that’s more your style.
The total bill was incredibly reasonable at 48.50 euros, including Cupertino (their service tax). We felt the meal was well worth it, and we left an additional 5 euros tip for the excellent service.
Overall, the food was excellent, the service was friendly and warm, and the atmosphere made it feel like a true Roman dining experience. We left happy, full, and with great memories....
Read moreOne of the worse restaurants I have even been too! The waitress did not understand one bit of English, so it was difficult to order. We tried to cooperate by using google translate and pointing at menu, but she just gave us an attitude. She scoffed at us and walked away. She came back to us with the wrong order and when we tried to tell us, she started yelling at us in Italian. I didn’t understand what she was saying completely but I can tell by the way she was pointing, she was blaming us for the mistake. Anyway, the food is mediocre, the place looks decent, but the staff is horrible. Customers should be treated with respect, so I was disappointed in the way we were treated. In addition, it looked like her colleague understand a bit of English, so we wish she would have told him to help us when she didn’t understand anything. If I could give 0 stars I would. Lastly, she added a 1 dollar tip to our bill.... if I could give a tip, I would give none to her. If you are in Rome, avoid this place unless you are Italian and can speak Italian, as others are treated rudely. Instead go down a bit further to another restaurant that have great food and treats...
Read moreTerrible in every sense We checked the reviews and this place sounded amazing with a 4.3 average and just round the corner from our hotel. We arrived and an old man (owner?) ushered us to an unlayed table and waited 10 minutes before we were offered menus. The menu was uninspiring so we ordered a pizza each. They tasted like frozen pizza. Soggy undercooked base, watery tomato sauce and too much cheese. Not a patch on other pizzas we have enjoyed in Rome. The wine was awful and we weren't offered water to fill the dirty glasses on the table. Our table was by the door which kept getting stuck open so twice I had to get up to close the door as staff were more interested in a large group of diners. I watched the old man try to put a slice of tiramisu back in the larger cake, dropped the slice on the side, picked it up with his bare hands and just pressed it back into the cake. Needless to say we didn't order dessert . The wine was also terrible. I'd hazard a guess that most of these 5* reviews are fake or paid for as it was a...
