Al Petes Vino e Cibo in Cittavecchia — Restaurant in Trieste

Very unfriendly waitress (small, dark haired. Quotation: "the guest is not always right"). Other waiters apologized for her behavior but did nothing against it. Surroundings unthrivy (construction area nearby). We waited more than one hour for our main dish. And when they served it we got very hard and cold risotto and noodles. We know Italian cuisine very well and there is a difference between al dente and duro. Waitress began to shout and quarrel against us. We booked very short notice after finding Al Petes in the Michelin guide and seeing it was round the corner from our hotel. We decided to go for the tasting menu and really enjoyed it: creative and thoughtful dishes which were really varied. Highlights for me were the venison tartare and the cacio e pepe ravioli, but I didn't think there was a weak dish. Our waiter and sommelier were friendly and knowlegable, also incredibly patient and generous in explaining the detail of dishes and wine to us in English. Quiet and elegant space for our party of 4 to dine in. Promptly seated when we arrived with our reservation. The pasta and clams dish that I ordered to start needed more flavour but my husband’s gnocchi dish was very flavourful. The grilled octopus dish was very well done, however the turbot fish dish that was served that evening was prepared as a “fish cake ring” that surprised our table and wasn’t quite explained that well. The servers seemed to be quite curt and abrupt with us and we it made us feel slightly like we were inconveniencing them.
