Il Barbabuc — Restaurant in Turin

The best food I’ve had in Italy so far, and I’ve been to Turin, Milan, and Rome. The pasta is delightful, the service is outstanding, and the overall atmosphere is stellar. My fiancé and I came in to eat for lunch on our way to the train station with our two large suitcases, and the staff sat us down no problem to work with us. I don’t recommend going in with your bags (because you should do your best to enjoy this restaurant in its entirety), but it speaks to the staff service the fact that they let us in and catered to us without shady looks or remarks. When we sat down, they spoke to us in English because they could tell we were foreign, but when we asked them to speak to us in Italian slowly so we could practice more, they were so kind and helpful! Now on the the most important part of this review, the food! I cannot remember exactly what we got for our main courses, but just know that anything you order off of the menu will be amazing! I know that whatever pasta I had, had Speck in it, and it was DELICIOUS! My fiancé had the beef tartar and then some other kind of pasta for dinner and was highly pleased! We paired our meals with Barolo wine. The more expensive one is DEFINITELY worth it, we tried a glass of each kind. Finally, the desserts were VERY delicious and well balanced. The only criticism I have is that the sorbet I had could have been more balanced with a firmer and more flavored granola. Small but cosy restaurant with smiley manager. I had a pasta with a bottle of nebbiolo, which was pretty good! It is a little work (5min) from the porta nuova, and now it is in my list.

Regrettable UPDATE (Apr 2023) I left a 5 star review in February 2023 when I had a dinner with my Italian friend. I went back to the restaurant in April 2023 to entertain my business partner from the UK, but the service was not as good as the previous one. There were two staffs (different manager from my previous visit) in the hall, who did not provide us with needed attention. We ended up waiting for several minutes until I needed to call them to order the water and drink. They did not even bother asking us for dessert in the end. When I approached to the counter for the payment, one of the staffs were having chat with the other table. I had to wait for 3-4 minutes with patience until he completed his chat. We came here for lunch with our baby. Staff was very accommodating. For the appetizer we ordered, hand cut beef tartare and a cheese plate. The cheese plate had variety of 4 cheeses, one soft, one semi soft, and two flavored cheeses one with truffle and one with red pepper it was served with trio sauces: wildflower honey, pear mustard and a fruity wine jam. The beef tartare was well seasoned and very fresh. For entree, we had octopus with polenta which was incredibly melt in your mouth soft, perfectly complemented by the salty polenta. The second entre was wine braised beef with charred vegetables, also delicious. For dessert we had the mild/dark chocolate mousse with hazelnuts and cappuccino. Very satisfying experience....
