I returned home 3 days ago and my best memory from 4 weeks holidaying in Italy was our time spent at Hotel Il Portichetto. Our view of Lake Como from the breakfast balcony was absolutely breathtaking. Breakfast was superb with fresh fruits, cereals, a variety of fruit juices, coffees, teas, boiled eggs, fresh scrambled eggs cooked by Rita each morning, a variety of cakes and the lightest croissants that melted in my mouth. Our room was air-conditioned, immaculately clean with comfortable beds and extra blankets. We always had plenty of hot water for showering and having a washing machine with all laundry products supplied was great, especially because we had soiled clothing each day after hiking. The path down to Varenna was fairly steep but if coming back up is a problem, then it is a short taxi ride to Vezio. There is also a free night bus that leaves from Varenna train station 7 p.m. until late. This presently ends in October We ate 3 dinners at the restaurant Il Portichetto, next to the hotel and the meals were all excellent. Staff were attentive, friendly and spoke some English. The icing on the cake for Hotel Il Portichetto was the fabulous swimming pool and spa, very necessary during the heat of summer. I left some valuable items in our room and Rita sent a WhatsApp message with a photograph and communicated how to receive these in Australia. Thank you so much Rita and Kirsty for sharing your beautiful part of Italy and for the company of your friendly little dog Bippo, he did love to sit on the step to say hello at breakfast. I will miss the church bells ringing and all that Hotel Il Portichetto had to offer. Apartments are also available and Rita treats every guest as a friend. Thanks for helping me speak some more Italian Rita. Rita also collected us in Varenna from the ferry, to take our heavy luggage to the hotel, Stay at Hotel Il Portichetto for at least 3 nights, you will be pleasantly surprised...
Read moreMy husband and I just finished our stay at Hotel Il Portichetto - a hidden gem in Lake Como, located just above Varenna in Vezio. We were very happy with our stay here! Rita is an amazing host, as well as her sweet and friendly dog that you’ll see around the property! Rita got in touch with us before our stay and arranged for a car to pick us up from the train station, as the hotel is a bit of a hike up the mountain and we would not have been able to do that with our bags. She was also very responsive when we would message her via WhatsApp with any questions we had before arriving.
Rita and the staff were very kind, welcoming, and friendly. In addition, our room was very comfortable and clean, and it was a big and spacious room, too! It was also right by the pool and hot tub. Another thing we loved was having a washing machine and a clothes drying rack - very convenient! We enjoyed a nice dinner at the restaurant beside the hotel our first night, and a yummy breakfast the next morning.
We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for an affordable stay, with clean and comfortable rooms, a wonderful staff, and in a peaceful and relaxing spot!
Just be aware that this hotel is not actually in the town of Varenna - as mentioned above, it’s a bit of a hike up and down - maybe 15-20 minutes, and there is an incline.
However, Rita provides a list of numbers for different taxis, so if you’d rather not hike up and down, it’s less than a 10 minute taxi ride, for about 12 or 13 euro. Also, if you’re using a travel data-only eSIM like us, the numbers are all accessible using WhatsApp.
Finally, you’ll have the most amazing views and you’ll truly feel like you’re in such a magical place, away from the hustle and bustle and noise of the town. If you’re planning to visit Castello di Vezio, it’s a quick walk from the hotel, so that’s also a plus.
Grazie mille Rita and the staff at Hotel Il...
Read moreThe booking for this two night stay was made by a third part so I’m unable to comment on value but the quality of the stay was superb, mainly due to the it’s staff. ||Rita (owner) replied to an email sent pre arrival and arranged for a taxi to meet us from the train station as we were arriving quite late and out of season. We were then met by Kirsty, part of the hotels team who booked us in. ||We also had arranged with Rita an evening meal on arrival. It was a local festival day and the family and friends were all enjoying a supper together, we were made to feel very welcome by all. The homemade ravioli, followed by braised beef was washed down with local red wine. ||We were allocated a room in one of the four around the pool, a good-sized, spotless room which is well thought out with all the little extras that you might need. (Iron, umbrellas/fridge with bottled water, welcome bottle of wine/tea + coffee and in the decent size bathroom even a washing machine, detergent provided) ||There is a collective poolside patio outside the room for the four poolside rooms, which is well positioned with olive trees and catches the afternoon sun. ||Being out of season and not many places open we very grateful to Rita in providing us an ample breakfast at no extra charge both mornings.||Accessing the lakeside and main town area, there is a footpath that drops 800m+ into the centre, trainers/boots recommended, it took 15 minutes descending + 25 to walk back up. The view is superb out over the lake. ||We caught a local ferry (9€ pp) across to Menaggio (15minute crossing) which have stunning views out over the lake. ||Again due to most places being shut we opted for Rita’s homemade cooking on the second night, again it was delicious. ||A huge thank you to Rita and her team/family for making us feel so welcome, we throughly enjoyed our...
