La Prosciutteria Venezia – A Carnivore’s Paradise in the Heart of Venice
Venice may be known for its canals and romance, but hidden in its winding streets is a gem for those who appreciate the finer, meatier things in life: La Prosciutteria Venezia. We stumbled upon this place by pure chance, the kind of serendipity that happens when you're wandering back from St. Mark's Square, slightly lost and a little hungry. It was the boar’s head mounted on a pillar, staring out from the end of a long glass case filled with cured meats, cheeses, and olives, that stopped us in our tracks. You know you’ve found something special when a place like this beckons you in from the narrow alleyways of Venice.
We made a mental note and returned the next day for lunch, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The place itself feels like a shrine to pork, with sausages and pork shoulders hanging from the ceiling, shelves stacked high with wine, sauces, and spices. It’s small, unpretentious, and exactly the kind of place where you can lose yourself in the simple joy of great food and wine.
We ordered the Tagliere Gourmet—essentially, a cutting board for two but elevated to a kind of rustic art form. Cured meats that melt in your mouth, cheeses that hit every note from sharp to creamy, crostini topped with artisanal sauces, roasted vegetables, seasonal fruits, and jams and honey that tasted like they were made just for this moment. Every bite was a reminder of why Italy is the undisputed king of simple, fresh, and intensely flavorful food.
The owner himself took the time to walk us through the board, explaining the origins and flavors of each item with the kind of passion you don’t often see anymore. He even recommended a bottle of red wine to pair with our meal—an earthy, bold complement to the richness of the meats and cheeses.
It wasn’t just the best lunch we had in Venice; it was the best meal we had in our entire 10-day tour of Italy. La Prosciutteria is a place for those who appreciate the craft of good food, served without fanfare but with a deep respect for tradition and flavor. If you find yourself in Venice, do yourself a favor: skip the tourist traps and let the boar’s head...
Read moreI don't really know where I should start with this review. Maybe first of all, the food was delicious. The products they were presenting in their menu are of good quality and the translation into a proper dish was creativ. HOWEVER, unfortunately, there are a lot of things that won't allow you to enjoy your meal. Let's address the 3 cardinal mistakes: first of all, the cutlery and the plates were one-way. With the arising importance of sustainability, this is an absolute no-go; but in an restaurant aspect, you cannot expect from me to actually eat and cut my food with it, not to mention to peel a whole melon with it. I kinda guess, this is their whole concept but honestly, this concept sucks. Second, if you offer salad and you don't put oil dressing it (on purpose, I guess, so the client can make their own dressing to one's own taste) then it would be nice to also bring oil and vinegar to the table. Third, the service ... o dear, I don't know where to start there. Let's just say, they were completely overwhelmed with literally everything. To wrong deliveries to our table, the bill was a complete mess, and the communication with the waiters in English was difficult. All in all, it was a total mess, unfortunately, which is really sad because the food was delicious and the ambience was really nice. I just hope for them, that they...
Read moreI originally joked about coming to this prosciutteria (ham shop) and asking them for something vegan but when I walked past again today I saw they had bruschetta with fresh cherry tomatoes and I had been searching for an hour to find something vegan to eat. When I asked them what else they had that was vegan the waiter pointed out that option 12 of the schiacciata was also vegan. They didn't have vegan milk but made us delicious black decaf americano coffee. They have a lot of veggies in the display so I suppose it's also possible to create your own sandwich as the staff speak English. Both of the vegan options we had were delicious and very generous portions. Toilets are wheelchair accessible with a wheelchair...
