Osteria Ai 40 Ladroni — Restaurant in Venice

This is by far the most disappointing experience in Venice. We ducked in mid thunderstorm to escape the rain and having not read any reviews we were hopeful. I would strongly suggest to everyone to avoid this place as it is awful by any standard, and we aren't that picky. From the start my girlfriend and I were greeted by disinterested waiter who sat us down at one of the tables and demanded that we choose our food straight away even before we got a chance to look at the menu properly. When we told him we needed another minute he told us that the kitchen is closing and we need to order right away. We ordered one seafood antipasto as well as one shrimp and mushroom tagliatelle as a main to share. What we got was a few plates of baby shrimp and squid so deep fried in oil that tasted like it hadnt been changed for a long time. It was disgusting but we were so hungry that we tried to have some of it. As a main they brought us crab gnocchi which wasn't what we ordered. I mentioned this to one of the other waiters and he just said "ok" and took the plate away. He then proceeded to charge us for two antipasto serves which were ridiculously expensive instead of what we actually ordered, even though we only ate a quarter of it all. The only good thing was the house red wine which, for whatever reason was kept in the fridge and served cold. So, we ended up paying 50 euro for what was essentially awful food and service. To top it off, my girlfriend got food poisoning a few hours later. Avoid...

This is my second visit to Osteria Ai 40 Ladroni. The first visit was in 2022, and both visits were highly enjoyable and memorable. They have THE BEST seafood I've ever had (in or out of Italy), and the atmosphere is wonderful! The food is extremely fresh and it is prepared and served very quickly. The employees are incredibly nice and genuinely welcoming. Eating here is an experience that truly feels like you are dining at a close friends home. I honestly can't say enough good things about this restaurant or it's staff. It is a little off the beaten path on the Venice isles but well worth the detour. Esperienza molto piacevole: atmosfera unica, piatti locali e ben eseguiti, nonostante lo stampo "rustico" ( menzione di merito per seppie alla veneziana e baccalà mantecato)...anche se i primi piatti non erano proprio il massimo.. Ciò nonostante qualità prezzo non ottimale a mio avviso. Servizio disponibile. Peccato per una caduta di stile: abbiamo speso 100€ in 2 (decisamente eccessivo per la qualità, a noi piacciono le "bettole" per la loro autenticità, ma anche meno..), e per due amari del capo ci hanno stampato uno scontrino a parte da 10€ , mentre ad altri clienti dallo scontrino anche più "umile" hanno offerto con molto entusiasmo i digestivi... anche se era la prima volta che mangiavano la.. quindi non cortesia da clienti affezionati. Dispiace ché il nostro entusiasmo non sia stato ricambiato.

Avevo il dubbio che il trattamento differenziato (quello il problema ovviamente, non l'aver pagato quanto ordinato) per i digestivi fosse dovuto alla nostra provenienza, mi spiego: il tavolo a cui sono stati offerti era composto da due signori sulla 60ina, del nord Italia, anch'essi turisti (il cameriere era quasi convinto che fossero veneziani, e li ha gentilmente intrattenuti...salvo poi farsi spiegare che erano di Torino), mentre noi, una coppia di 30enni di Roma, probabilmente siamo stati visti come clienti/turisti di categoria "B", quindi da "spolpare" allegramente, ma inizialmente pensavo fosse mia malafede.. Leggendo le risposte del proprietario ai commenti precedenti si è sciolto ogni dubbio: ne esce fuori lo stereotipo del provincialismo razzista del Nord, il Nord quello brutto (vi invito a leggere le recensioni negative). Apertamente antisemita, razzista nei confronti di chi viene "dal Sud" del suo stesso paese ...il poveretto pensa di essere l'esponente di una civiltà superiore, la sua Repubblica di Venezia..in cui è ammesso trattar male e prendere a male parole chi viene da luoghi a lui non congeniali. E' noto che esista gente del genere al mondo, basta farsi un giro su internet, mi dispiace solo di avergli dato i soldi, e che gestisca un locale in un posto così grazioso in una delle città più belle al mondo.
