On my last full day in Venice, I spent it checking out the neighborhood of Cannaregio. This place was on my "to eat at" list due to it sounding like it has the best cicchetti in the city. I went around lunchtime on a Wednesday and it was pretty busy. I asked what their vegetarian options were, and tried one of everything they offered. I think they thought it was weird that I wanted both a caffe doppio AND acqua frizzante, but I assured them that these two beverages were the only things keeping me alive after all my late-night Carnevale shenanigans.
I don't understand what kind of marinating magic they do to their vegetables, but let me tell you: whatever they are doing to their tomatoes is one of the best freaking things I have ever tasted. Dill? I don't know - who cares. RUN, don't walk, to eat here.
After I had put that tomato in my mouth and exclaimed out loud, "oh my GOD", I made sure to give my compliments to the chef. He was very kind to take the time to speak with me about the cicchetto, life in Venice and waxing poetic about the difference in Cannaregio vs. San Marco. He recommended I go to Castello - no time on this trip, but next time!
If you want to escape the crushing crowds of San Marco, come to Cannaregio to get a feel for the "real" Venice and DO NOT...
Read moreBacaro ae Bricoe: Come for the Views, Stay for the Family (5/5 Stars - The Best in Venice!) This review has to start with Francesco—the number one, the absolute best! He and his fantastic colleagues, Riccardo and Andrea, are the heart and soul of this place. Because of these amazing people, you don't just feel like a customer; you feel home. This is the authentic Venetian spirit perfected. Do yourself a favor: if you are ever in Venice, make sure you stop by and say hi to Francesco! Bacaro ae Bricoe is truly an unmissable gem. Not only do you get this incredibly warm, familial service, but the location is spectacular—it’s a beautiful waterfront spot, perfect for sipping an ombra and watching the boats go by. The atmosphere is cozy, rustic, and constantly buzzing with happy locals. And let's talk about the food and value. Their cicchetti are miniature masterpieces of Venetian flavor, but the prices are highly reasonable, especially considering the quality and the prime location. You can enjoy an evening of phenomenal wine, delicious small bites, and unmatched hospitality without breaking the bank. This is more than a wine bar; it is an authentic, soul-soothing slice of Venice, run by three of the best hosts in the city. I will absolutely recommend this...
Read moreStumbled across this bacaro by pure chance while exploring Cannaregio and needing a rest. What a lucky discovery.
The staff were genuinely welcoming from the moment we walked in. They had an impressive spread of cicchetti, and the server took real time to explain each option without any pressure. His enthusiasm for the food was infectious and really helpful since we'd never tried cicchetti before.
We only ordered four pieces since we were just looking for a quick drink and somewhere to sit, but we're glad we gave them a go. The flavours were completely new to us - really distinctive and unlike anything we'd had before. The server mentioned these small plates are popular with locals, which explains why the place had such an authentic feel.
The cicchetti were well-prepared and reasonably priced. More importantly, the whole experience felt genuine rather than touristy, which is rare in Venice.
Service was friendly without being overbearing, and the atmosphere was relaxed and unpretentious. It's exactly the kind of place you hope to find when you're wandering around a new city.
Would definitely return and recommend to anyone wanting to try something...
