Tourist trap! We were hungry and the place looked busy so we said ok. The prices were a bit high but we would expect that with the location.
But were we disappointed. The food was at best mediocre to bad.
We started out with aperitifs and a bruschetta. I’d say that the bruschetta was the best cooked thing we ate, and I’ll give that a 3 out of 5. My girlfriend didn’t like it however and gave it 2 out of 5.
The pasta was “ok” in flavor, far from great, I can make better at home. The pasta was also a bit overcooked in my taste - quite far from “al dente”. This goes for both of our pasta dishes, a pasta with tomato-sauce, and a seafood pasta. 2 out of 5.
We then had grilled chicken with fries and fried calamari with a salad. The biggest criticism here goes for the chicken with fries.
The amount/piece of chicken was basically half or maybe even a third of a chicken breast filet. It was cut thin to have the “full size” of a chicken breast when you see it from above. But the restaurant serves at least 2 maybe 3 portions of grilled chicken from one chicken fillet. Forgetting the portion size of the chicken, it really didn’t taste that much, not bad, but not really any flavor at all. The French fries were bland tasting store bought frozen ones they’d just fried. And they’d even did a bad job at that, because they could easily been fried a bit longer for more crunch, and please ad at least salt before serving them. 0-1 out of 5.
Lastly the fried calamari was “ok”, portion could have been bigger and the taste was nothing amazing, “just ok”. Let say 2.5 out of 5.
So what then makes the overall grade 1 out 5:
First, we were promised fresh food made from scratch. “Homemade fresh pasta” etc. I highly doubt this is the case. Especially those fries.
Secondly at 2/3 of the price I’d given a maybe a 2-3 star rating, but the prices are to high for the quality of the food overall.
Lastly, they also added, without mentioning it, a 12.5% service charge on the tab. Adding this is by European norms al ready not really kosher. And it’s also a high tip by european norms. In Europe it’s more or less a voluntary tipping of approx 10% if you’re satisfied with the service. (I know this is low for Americans but waiters in Europe actually gets paid an hourly wage as well unlike the US...) So the overall price vs value performance was already bad, and I don’t like when they try to trick customers. By pure routine I almost rounded up the tab like a normally do until I realized they’d already added 12.5%.
So all in all, a tip is to choose some other place there’s tons of restaurants way...
Read moreWe are staying in Venice for one month. In the past 3 weeks, we have been to this restaurant four times. We always order the same thing each time. My husband gets an aperol spritz, and I get a limoncello spritz. Then we each order a second drink. It comes with bruschetta.
Two days ago, we did the same thing. When we were done with with our first drink, I caught one of the server’s attention. I tapped our glasses and says “two more please”. I then went to the restroom.
When I returned, there were two aperol spritzs on the table. I looked at my hubby, and he said don’t ask…just don’t ask.
I picked up the drink and went over to the server that I ordered from. He said I didn’t tell him what I wanted, I just pointed to the glasses. He then said that he wasn’t even my server, so he didn’t know what we ordered. That’s why he brought aperol. I asked him to please change it to limoncello. He said no, as he would have to pay for it. He could tell by my face that I was very displeased.
I went back to the table and told my husband what happened. The server then came back with a limoncello spritz and told us he would just have to pay for it. His attitude was terrible.
Even though it was not our fault, I didn’t want the server to have to pay for it. I was just going to leave cash on the table to pay for the drink. My husband agreed.
We finished our drink and asked for the bill. There is a sign (picture below) which says there is no service charge. When we got our bill, there it was…a service charge (also pictured below).
Well, that was the end of us leaving cash on the table, and that will be the last time we go there. They lost good customers over one silly drink. It was the attitude of the server that really...
Read moreAte here 3x on our trip to Venice. 1st time was just looking to get out of the rain as we had just eaten brunch at the hotel. Stopped, got a round of drinks but ended up getting a tiramisu. The tiramisu was delicious. It was perfectly moist and was what i was hoping for when ordering. After seeing what was being delivered to other customers, we looked over a menu and thought we’d try to make it back. We showed back up for dinner ordered bruschetta and a calzone. Both were exceptional! The bruschetta was perfectly toasted, the tomatoes were ripe and flavorful and seasoned nicely with olive oil and basil. The calzone was very good. I really liked the crust. After having several pizzas in this trip to Italy, I had to say this crust was one of, if not the best. The sauce wasn’t over spiced like American/Italian sauces are. It had a fresh taste. The mozzarella was melted beautifully. It had the perfect amount of sauce over the top and inside that the crust never got soggy but had enough to give a good combination of flavor and moisture. And once again, got the tiramisu. For the final meal in Venice, we returned and got us the spaghetti with meatball, the bruschetta and another tiramisu. Wife was craving meatballs. Spaghetti was served piping hot, au dente, along with a side of bread. Meatballs were delicious. Sauce was the same as spread on the calzone but was a good, fresh, and not over-seasoned sauce. The only disappointment was the Parmesan cheese. Not sure if it was to satisfy the American idea of Parmesan cheese but it was just the dry, granulated, canned Parmesan. Once again, the tiramisu was perfect. Reasons for 4 stars was it’s on a busy street with occasionally loud passerby’s but overall was very satisfied with...
