Walking in, you get an immediate Taisho or early Showa Era vibe. The entire decor feels frozen in time, the inside is as beautifully appointed and old school as the outside. They have parking lots in the front and the rear, if one is full, go to the other around the block.
Extensive drink menu, less so with the food because they’re more focused on sashimi and sushi. I wish there were more cooked fish options, but the cod in miso sauce was broiled perfectly and flavorful.
We had both hot and cold soba, which were both delicious with fresh, chewy noodles. The broiled eggplant with miso sauce was wonderful with two fried shrimp on top. The miso soup had a great dark miso taste that I prefer and a nice fish broth. Bonus for little bits of fish at the bottom of the soup.
Omakase sushi did not disappoint; great selection of fresh seafood, and two mini omelettes. I saved my two favorite pieces for last, uni and ikura. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for fresh sashimi or sushi in a homie comforting setting that evokes the sushi/drinking establishments of old.
Curiously, I expected a call bell, but we had to go old school by hailing down service staff. I guess it’s all part of the old school charm of this place.
Next time, if I’m not driving, I’ll get some refreshing sake to pair with...
Read moreGreat food. Great sushi masters behind bar. Clean. Nice ambiance. OUTSIDERS BEWARE: The other staff doesn’t seem to want outsiders there. I struggled to give them a 3 (b/c of other staff) or 4(for the sushi and guys who made it). That’s probably why all the bad service comments. They said they were booked all night and sat us next to the kitchen at the bar. When We asked to move one more space over they said no sorry. Ok. No problem. We didn’t mind as much. Another couple sat there an hour later. However, they did not look as busy as they stated. I simply got a feeling they did not want outsiders. No one spoke english and that may be a reason. I know it’s uncomfortable for them to try. I completely understand. The guys making the sushi were great and tried to communicate and we highly enjoyed them!! 2 old guys and 1 man that looks like a doctor with glasses. Those were our favorites! Sit at the bar if you go for any service. They will at least...
Read moreOrdered food for 4 persons, spend more than 5K Yen per person. The fried fish, tofu, karage, chawamushi, braised pork, soup soba that we ordered were ok to nice except for their chef's Omakase sushi set, at 4K Yen per set, were not ok and unfortunately we ordered 3 sets - you get what you paid for... sad to say this, but it is not too much different from normal takeout sushi tray out there... maybe we were unlucky and visited on a Thursday evening when their raw fish stock wasn't at it's best state. As such I can only give an honest two stars. Some of the reviews in this thread are either overhyped or the product delivery is inconsistent. Owners and food servers are very nice and friendly...
