🐟 When in Enoshima, trying shirasu, or whitebait, is an absolute must! These tiny, delicate fish are a local specialty, often served fresh or boiled, and offer a unique taste of coastal Japan. We decided to try ours at Tobiccho, a well-loved spot known for its shirasu dishes, and it didn’t disappoint. The fish was prepared to perfection, with a light, fresh flavor that’s hard to describe—delicate yet full of umami, a true representation of Japanese coastal cuisine.
While my wife and I savored every bite, the kids weren’t quite as thrilled—perhaps an acquired taste that they’ll come to appreciate in time! Still, it was fun for them to experience a new and traditional dish, and they loved watching the vibrant activity in the restaurant, which added to the experience.
Tobiccho offers shirasu in various forms, from donburi bowls to sushi and salads, allowing you to enjoy this local delicacy in different ways. The atmosphere is lively, and the restaurant staff are friendly and helpful, making it a pleasant experience for families and food enthusiasts alike.
For anyone visiting Enoshima, I highly recommend trying shirasu. It’s a unique and delicious way to connect with the region’s food culture, and Tobiccho is the perfect place to start. Even if it’s a new flavor for the family, the experience of trying such a local delicacy is one of those travel memories that...
Read moreWe went to tobiccho at 1 Chome-6-7 Enoshima, Fujisawa, Kanagawa 251-0036, on Aug/3/2023 at 2 pm. Although the food was nice, we ended up having the worst restaurant experience in our Japan trip.
All customers have to sign up to get the number, and wait before entering the restaurant. Since the sign-up device ONLY has Japanese version and we don’t understand Japanese, the restaurant lady staff who standing outside helped us to get the ticket “63”. It is a long waiting in the hot summer, so we bought a cold beer from her. We stood in front of her drinking beer and asked if it was our turn a few times since we didn’t understand what number she called in JAPANESE. We waited and waited until other two groups of people, “64” and “65” (2 for each group, the same size like us) were shown on the screen and all entered the restaurant. Apparently that lady paid no attention to customers who don’t understand JAPANESE even though we tried to remind her. She just ignored us and let us waiting like idiots.
I had very good impression of Japanese people who are polite and thoughtful. However, this staff of Tobiccho is awfully rude and completely ruined our mood. Considering the food is tasty, I still give...
Read moreFor the main store, this place seems pretty small and crowded. Don't let that detract you from coming, as it's very popular for a reason. I opted for the 4 color rice bowl, which consists of raw Sakura shrimp, raw shirasu, negi toro, ikura (Salmon eggs), and a raw (or half-cooked if you prefer) egg. Mix it all up and enjoy! It came very fresh and it was not salty or overtly fishy tasting at all! Delicious!
Raw shirasu is not for everyone, particularly with western foreigners. The staff told me it's particular with some of them, as they are sometimes not even willing to try the free samples of cooked shirasu they hand out. Just be aware if you tend to avoid fishy textures.
If you time it right, you might be able to get away with little to no wait. I came right at about 3:30 PM and I only had about a 15 min wait. When I was leaving, however, it...
