I visited Coffee House Noda, a celebrated traditional kissaten in Fukuoka, because it’s widely recommended. However, if you’re a tourist who doesn’t speak Japanese, I sincerely advise not to go here.
They gave us a menu entirely in Japanese, so I politely asked if there was an English menu. The staff, with a noticeably unfriendly attitude, pointed to a small QR code in the corner of the menu and said only “QR code” before walking away.
Shortly after we were seated, the staff placed a small plate in front of us, which looked like an ordinary side plate.
After the coffee arrived, my friend gently moved the plate aside to make a bit more space—but the staff came back, clearly annoyed, and returned it to its original place. It turned out that was actually the saucer for the coffee cup.
Here’s what I don’t understand: if such a minor detail visibly irritates you, why work in customer service?
It happened to be my friend’s birthday—the same friend who you treated so poorly—and we had come all the way from abroad to enjoy this special occasion.
Was it really so wrong to ask for an English menu or to move a plate slightly?
The coffee is priced at ¥1,200 per cup — which is quite expensive — and at that price, I believe exceptional service is part of what you're paying for.
And honestly, even putting aside the disappointing service, I didn’t find anything particularly special about the coffee or the pudding. Based on taste alone, it felt overrated.
You position yourselves as a kissaten — a traditional Japanese café — but if this is the level of hospitality you provide, it’s very disappointing.
Especially since this place is known to be popular with international tourists, the lack of even basic courtesy made the experience all the more...

it was absolute clear discrimination towards the tourists, they were rude and condescending not just towards me and my wife but towards the other tourist group i saw.
please, for the sake of us travellers’ mood when visiting your beautiful country - put a sign that says no...

not recommended for foreigners!!!
i’ve been in japan for three years and this is the worst customer service i have ever experienced here.
we went because some friends of mine who are visiting me in japan wanted to go. when we walked in there was no greeting so it was uncomfy from the start, but ordering was the worst.
i’ve also worked in food service, so i can understand how it can be annoying to have people come in five minutes before orders stop, but it’s actually insane to bully customers into rushing through their order.
my friends don’t speak any japanese so i was trying to translate, but i was consistently interrupted over and over before even getting to finish what i was trying to say.
frankly it seems like they really dislike the influx of inbound tourists. however, it won’t be ending anytime soon they really need to make some improvements. i live in japan too so i get it, but that is completely disrespectful treatment. i feel really bad that my friends had to go...
