This restaurant is out of the way of where tourists to Hakodate typically hang around. I ended up here for dinner by accident but it turns out to be a blessing as the food is excellent and the staff is very helpful and offer amazing service. I ordered a variety of food - a bit of nigiri sushi, sashimi, lamb, salad, etc. Most of the food is good and not typical of what we find in US sushi joint. I love the hotate (scallop) nigiri the most. It's by far the best scallop nigiri I've ever had. The tamago was fresh made and very moist. Can't complain about the Sapporo beer either. I had to catch a sailing cruise after dinner, and the staff/owner made sure the food was prepared in time, and have a cab waiting outside the restaurant with instruction to the cruise terminal. I realized later than the staff/owner has a large selection of sake and very knowledgeable about sake. It's a pity that I don't drink sake.

My mom and I joined Ms. Kahata for a wonderful omakase dinner after a long day exploring Hakadote. We emailed her the night before about a reservation via her website, and she confirmed via email a couple of hours later. The food was incredible and we really enjoyed chatting with her during our meal. The restaurant is in a lovely old in a residential area. Would recommend to anyone looking for amazing sushi from an expert chef.

My wife and I stopped by for the lunch sushi making experience and it was the highlight of our Hakodate trip. The teacher was super attentive, warm, and fun. She took the time to explain every step and demonstrate the proper technique. The fish was also super fresh and the sides were delicious. Highly recommend if you're looking for an engaging and delicious afternoon experience.

This restaurant was right across from our apartment. It could not have been a bigger surprise in what looks to be a residential area: very friendly staff, delicious food, welcoming ambiance. We came with 2 young children and were given a separate corner and all the accoutrements to be comfortable. The food really was outstanding, some of the best I've had in all of Japan.

The day after, we had to take our young son to hospital, and once again the staff did everything they could to help us (their English is exceptionally good). We are very, very grateful for all their help, and cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough -- with or without children, you will not be disappointed. Well worth a taxi ride if you're located elsewhere...

Truly one of the most enjoyable meals of my life, and an absolute highlight of my trip to Japan. The food was incredible (especially the sushi), it’s an incredibly intimate atmosphere (our 8 person group got the restaurant to ourselves), and the staff was so friendly, explained all the dishes, answered every question, and went above and beyond to make our experience lovely. We had an awesome mix of learning how to make sushi and then also getting top-class food made for us in a classic dining experience. This place is an absolute must-experience if you ever find yourself...
