This is simply amazing. I can say im a little foodie and a casual food journalist… and also that I have been extremely lazy to leave reviews during my whole 23 day Japan trip this time round and wanted to focus on spending time on the things that matter . However, this syokudo… is absolutely amazing. Enough to make me leave a review now. The atmosphere is nothing much of fine dining but it is absolutely top tier homely feels. Very clean. Prices are absolutely reasonable for the location, and the food… just wow. I left not any food behind at all.

Tonkatsu was amazingly juicy, not too thick not too thin. Flavour profile is great. Sauce went so well together. Rice was absolute gem. The yasai itame and butaniku itame… absolutely top tier stir frying technique, ingredients are the freshest. Flavours were strong without being overwhelming and not overwhelmed with oil and any of that kind. You wont get sick of it and can easily keep...

Highly recommend. We came here based on the google reviews and were not disappointed! Small family run place with a traditional Japanese feel. The couple who run the place were patient and understanding of our lack of Japanese. My partner is veggie but eats fish abroad due to lack of options. This place had lots of veggie options and if you ask politely they will cook dishes to your needs. The off-menu agedashi tofu has been mentioned a few times in the reviews so we tried it....SO GOOD! the sauce it came in is probably the best sauce I've ever tasted. Delicious!

ごちそうさま

If you're in the area you'll regret not giving it a try. Easy to access up and down the mountain from the Ninohirairiguchi bus stop at the top of the hill and the train station (Chokokunomori)...

Beautiful dinner ran by old couple. They were very welcoming. All the tablewares and utensils were beautiful. Walked in on a rain night when most places are closed. We were blown away by the food. Even though we live in America, the fried potato was the best potato wedges we have ever had. The grilled potato with butter was flavor and grilled to perfection. We tried the salted octopus and tea soaked rice without really knowing, and enjoyed both dishes. The fried chicken was tender and juice with crispy coating. If we are in the area again in the future, we will definitely...

We went in for dinner and were welcomed warmly by the staff. The menu is available in Japanese, English and Chinese which is very helpful and the selection of food lies between sashimi, deep fried fish and meat dishes, rice bowls, egg and chicken dishes and fried veggies. We ordered beer and oolong tea with the maguro (thuna) fry set and the katsudon (pork cutlet bowl) and both came with miso soup and a small plate of tsukemono (pickled veggies). Everything was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced 😊 definitely a great recommendation for the chokokunomori/gora area!

This place is outstanding! We stumbled upon it by chance after visiting the open air museum, and it’s easily been my favorite meal in Hakone and one of my favorite meals of my entire Japan trip. The agedashi tofu is an off-menu order that is perfectly lightly crisp on the exterior with a soft interior, and so flavorful. The chicken katsu was also so crispy without being at all oily. We also got the tuna, fried potatoes, and grilled eggplant. Everything was delicious, and this place is so affordable, too! Cozy, clean interior and friendly service. Highly recommend!
